August 4th, Helen Thomas, journalist, hero, and friend of my family
for many decades now, was 87 years old/young. A unique personality:
uncorruptable, untiring, and so necessary.

May she be around to write for my grandchildren.

21. Helen is the opposite of the "star" mentality

She is just as happy communicating with mere mortals
as with presidents (in some cases, like now, way more!).

Just try getting an answer from the likes of Tim Russert
(assuming anyone would WANT an answer from Tim Russert).

Wish we had 1000 journalists just like her.

28. Tell me about it!

She is one of the last of a generation. When we get together,
we always go over how my dad would have reacted to this or that.
When he died, it left only a very few of that generation of print
journalists--not owned by anyone, never hesitant to print those
"inconvenient" truths. Maybe if you are not an untouchable legend,
your career as a print journalist these days is over before it
starts unless you write what you are told.

It's a good thing we have untouchable legends like Helen around.
You can count the number of them on one hand.

29. I just spoke with Helen, and she says thanks to all

She actually called to confirm a dinner date, but
I mentioned the DU, and she was appreciative of
both those who wrote her and those who posted.

CNN did a small segment on her over the weekend
and it was actually very deferential to her, which
surprised her as they have gone so far to the right
of late. She thinks it's just out of fear from competition
from Faux, but maybe now that cheerleading for the far
right is slowly falling out of vogue, they'll pull back,
unless their advertisers yank them rightward again at the
first sign of evenhandedness.

35. Happy Birthday Helen. Does she have children or

grandchildren?

36. In all these years, I have never asked.

I was sort of reluctant to. In my experience, women her
age talk about family, present and past, if they want to,
and keep to themselves about it otherwise. I never asked,
and even way back when, my father never mentioned any either.
When I compare that to the only other high-profile elderly
woman I know (Ruth Westheimer, admittedly, a very different
kind of personality), the difference is great. Ruth never
stops going on about her late husband and her kids, and
their kids, etc.

I figure Helen will mention/would have mentioned family if
she had wanted to. She tells me that she is Detroit Lebanese,
and has said nothing else. We are supposed to meet up at a
Lebanese restaurant in Washington in couple of weeks. Maybe
some ethnic food and a relaxed atmosphere will bring out
more of her family past, but I will not pry. She has known me
practically since I could walk, so it's not like I have the
advantage here!
