This is a letter from the Amnesty International website:
Over the past few days, there have been lots of cheers around the Amnesty offices. Why?
Because we just won a major victory for the women, men, and children of Darfur who have been brutalized over the past four long years.
On Tuesday, the UN Security Council announced that it will deploy 26,000 peacekeepers and police to from a full hybrid UN-African Union mission by the end of 2007. This is amazing news.
This unprecedented number of UN boots on the ground will protect Darfuris at risk of attack, disease and starvation, and will aim to stabilize the region.
And while this victory has renewed my spirit and the spirit of everyone who has worked so hard to end the crisis, there is still much to be done before we can truly celebrate.
Help us keep the pressure on President Bush to ensure sufficient support and speedy deployment for UN peacekeepers.
Thank you for all that you do to protect human rights. Today, will you take a strong stand for the people of Darfur and sign our global petition? Help ensure that passage of this week’s UNSC Resolution is genuinely the beginning of lasting peace for women, men and children living there.
We’ll deliver the global petition to the White House, and press President Bush to use his influence to ensure that the new UN timeline for the deployment of UN peacekeepers and police to join the hybrid mission is followed and that peacekeepers have all the resources they need. It is time to guarantee the full protection of all civilians affected by violence in Darfur and the region.
But to meet our goal of 200,000 signatures, we need you to sign your name today. You and I must make it clear that we will not stand for any further steps backwards. We must move forward toward genuine peace and human rights in Darfur.
Thank you very much for your partnership.
Sincerely,
Larry Cox
