Join me if you can: I pledge not to buy any foods labeled |
|
"Distributed buy" with no country of origin.
We should not have to guess the source of the food we consume. I will also now ask at the meat department for the origin of the meat cuts I may buy. If there is a manager available in the produce department, I will do the same.
If enough of us do this, we may force some changes. Grocery retailers will begin to realize that we are serious.

2. I automatically assume "DISTRIBUTED BY" means, "manufactured in China" |
|
I don't buy anything that says, "distributed by." For example, there's a parmesan cheese that says, "IMPORTED," then on the back of the label it says, "distributed by %$@%$, U.S.A."
When one first looks at the label one assumes it comes from Italy. However, if it came from Italy, they'd SAY IT, as they'd be proud of it. It probably comes from China. I wrote them about it and they never responded, so I ceased buying their product.

3. I want my food labeled as Product of the USA. Unless, of course, |
|
it's French or Italian or Greek olive oil. Or Italian Parmagiano-Reggiano. Or other highfalutin gourmet treats, lol. I AM a foodie, after all.
But NOTHING from China!!! And nothing of unknown source.
Hit them in the wallet folks, 'cause Uncle Sam ain't gonna do a damned thing about the situation. It's up to all of us.

We've started making the local Farmer's Market a part of our regular routine. It's great to be able to get answers about the food directly from the person who raised the food.
The food is local, the quality is great, and a lot of it is actually CHEAPER than at the supermarket lately.

4. Eggzactly...one may not be able to compete with prices from China |
|
but one can certainly compete on the safety issues...I personally would spend more money for a product guaranteed safe by its country of origin. So would 90% of America!

Most "store brands" list only distributed by, w/no country of origin. Probably should consider it's from China, or some other unsanitary country.
We purchased a six pack of Green Giant asparagus & noticed when we got it home it is "product of Peru". At least it HAD the country of origin.
We grow a lot of our vegetables (can, freeze & dry them), & will probably buy another freezer to store a locally raised beef & pig for our meat. Have chickens for eggs. It is work, but we know where our food comes from & what it's been fed.
Would advise anyone who is able to do the same.
Our infrastructure is deteriorating & "terraists can strike at any time", so better be prepared to survive w/o the modern conveniences like FOOD!

6. I try not to buy labeled food |
|
it comes from the local farmer's market and I look the grower in the eye when I give him the money. For cheese and dairy, I go to the Mennonite store, because what they don't make themselves they get from the Amish. I've known Mennonites/Amish all my life and I guarantee that they make their own cheese and butter!

9. Wow, what good ideas! Thanks! And buy cheese only from these countries |
|
I can't buy everything fresh, but I hadn't thought of buying Mennonite dairy.
Here's a health tip for you and everyone that reads this. When you go to a supermarket deli, ask for cheese imported from: , Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. These places have passed laws that make it illegal for cows to be treated rBGH hormones. Insist on seeing the label before they slice it. It should state the place of origin clearly on the package : Product of (country).
I've seen cheese manufactured here that says, for example, "Danish style cheese." That's probably American cheese (or maybe CHINESE cheese!!!). Don't even go near that cheese until this country the same laws as , Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.

12. check also for kosher |
|
Kosher food will have a mark-a U in a circle or a K. The rabbis have to have inspected the plant and where meat is involved, it must be meat without hormones, butchered in a certain way.

My last health tip for buying healthy food. Most salmon served in the U.S. has been farmed in really nasty, filthy, contaminated fish farms (like most fish nowadays). To add insult to injury, I read that most of those farms are now located in China. Scary. To buy really good fresh salmon from Alaska (the purest) for your family costs an arm and a leg. An alternative to that is to buy CANNED salmon from Alaska. Get yourself some recipes and use the canned salmon. It's pure salmon from Alaska, the chunks left over after they sent out the giant filets to extremely expensive restaurants and the homes of the rich, and the cans are not expensive at all.

It was Broccoli. The label said "Distributed from California" I thought to myself, WTF does that mean. Friggin Broccoli.

22. I avoid imported food, but the the "distributed by" is a little tougher |
|
because there's more of it. Maybe I'll email the companies who sell the products I use and complain (and check to be sure the food isn't from China).
