Competing plans for San Fran skyscraper

SAN FRANCISCO - Architects unveiled three competing plans for a new downtown skyscraper and transit hub that would be the West Coast's tallest building.



"Today is an historic day," Mayor Gavin Newsom said as he pulled away a black cloth covering the three elaborate models at a City Hall ceremony Monday.

The three designs range in height from 1,200 feet to 1,375 feet — each much taller than the 853-foot Transamerica Pyramid, currently San Francisco's tallest building. At 1,018 feet, the U.S. Bank Tower in downtown Los Angeles is now the West Coast's tallest building

2. It makes sense because buildings in seismic zones are designed

to handle the stresses of quakes, effectively riding them out instead of crumbling to the ground.

5. SF's skyline has been changing dramatically recently

If they build this one though...it'll really make things look different. It will also give a lot more 'weight' to the southern downtown area.

7. I used to like San Francisco's skyline back in the old days

before all the huge skyscrapers. I guess I'm just old-fashioned.

just miles away, but, if I remember correctly, the transbay terminal area is landfill from the '06 quake!

I am completely disgusted by all of the oversized growth going on downtown, especially south of Market. Nothing but "luxury" highrise apartments. I have a friend who (amazingly) just paid $425,000 for a studio apartment in one of those monstrocities. He is also paying $400 a month comdo association fees, and another $100 a month for a parking space. :crazy: He is in a ground floor unit and, every weekend, he has to hose down the urine off his doorstep from all the drunks from the club down the block.

When I see all of those crazy condo/office towers, all I can think of is all the pants that will be shit when a 6. hits. I'm ashamed to say it makes me smile a bit. :)
