Oral sex can cause throat cancer
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 10:52 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
People who have had more than five oral-sex partners in their lifetime are 250% more likely to have throat cancer than those who do not have oral sex, a new study suggests.

The researchers believe this is because oral sex may transmit human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus implicated in the majority of cervical cancers.

The new findings should encourage people to consistently use condoms during oral sex as this could protect against HPV, the team says. Other experts say that the results provide more reason for men to receive the new HPV vaccine.

59. Suppose to use dental dams...
When I was teaching, a couple of my seniors asked me... their history teacher... what was analogous to condoms to use for cunnilingus. (I was 50 at the time and hadn't used a condom since the Corps) I called the AIDS hotline, and they said "dental dam.... you know, one of those thin rubber green things the dentist uses to mask off your whole mouth around the tooth he/she is working on."

That's about the most unappealing thing I could imagine! It strikes near and dear to my..... heart!

I told the kids, and they looked at me like I had lobsters growing out of my ears. I said that they should call the AIDS hotline from now on.... by themselves. I wrote the number on my board.

I sure am glad I'm outta that shit!

Next thing, there'll be an SDT where you just explode when you get it.

This is remedial safer sex education, people!

When performing oral sex on a woman, use an impermiable barrier such as a dental dam (the latex sheet that dentists use when filling cavities) or even just plastic wrap out of the kitchen. Crimeny, I'm a gay man and even I know this!

30. After reading the linked article, there is a solution that should be just as safe
If not safer. Get vaccinated against HPV and you should never need to worry that you will infect your partner. If you can guarantee that all of your partners are vaccinated against HPV, then have fun. If you are with a partner and you can not guarantee that your partner has been vaccinated, you are risking your own health and very likely the health of future partners. (If I remember correctly, HPV can linger on many body parts for several hours; even if you are immune, you can still spread it to others.)

Pass.

As the time I take to switch partners tends to have months of sexual inactivity (and being happily married now with no future partners planned for...I hope not) I don't think HPV is any worry I should ever bear.

41. Then it is back to relying on safer sex practices
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 11:44 AM by TechBear_Seattle
If you and your partner(s) are mutually monogamous, stay mutually monogamous and none of you have STDs, then you have nothing to worry about. If this is not the case, then you are putting yourself and your partners (and their partners and their partners and their partners and... you get the idea) at risk.

Knowing the risks and not taking steps to protect yourself and others is just not responsible.

Added: HPV is a known danger to health. It is the cause of cervical cancer and, if this study is verified, the cause of cancer in other parts of the body (I remember reading that HPV is a likely cause of most penile cancers as well.) So pervasive is this virus that I have no doubt either the existing vaccine will be proven safe and effective or another one soon will be. Once there is a vaccine that has been approved properly, it would be irresponsible for anyone not to get it. That's all I'm saying.

That even if "the damage is done", or there is an untested possibility that "the damage is done", you have a moral obligation -- and in some jurisdictions even a legal obligation -- to inform your parter of the "damage" and/or take protective measures against transmission.

77. I need to correct you
The existing vaccine has been proven safe and effective. Its been through the same long process of clinical trials that all others drugs and vaccines have been through-5-10 years of studies. I know this because I have access to some of the data on testing. This whole gardasil was fast-tracked with no safety studies is a myth and I am surprised to see someone with a science background believe this.

75. I hate to burst that bubble
but the HPV vaccination only covers a few strains and there are nearly 200 strains of HPV. I don't think they know yet whether the ones that cause cervical cancer are the same ones that cause esophageal cancer. Approximately 80% of us sexually active adults have one or more strains already, prior to getting the vaccination.

If you and your partner(s) are mutually monogamous, and stay mutually monogamous, and none of you have a communicable disease, then there is no need to practice safer sex.

47. In theory, yes.
Of course, in our terrific little society of today, would you trust anyone to communicate when things go wrong, not leave at the drop of a hat, keep your pants zipped if you see someone else you have a tinkerin' for, et cetera? Some people out there genuinely are moral, and the last few times I said this sort of thing I got hideous responses claiming some people claim to have morals solely because they never had a big opportunity to attempt to cheat. (those people can rot in hell.)

50. Which is exactly why
I use the phrase "stay monogamous" when I refer to monogamy in the context of safer sex practices. I don't know how many times I've heard of a "monogamous" couple where one or even both people were having outside sexual relations without telling their partner. Just because you are monogamous does not necessarily mean your partner is.

81. Yup
I'm polyamorous and I am fully aware of who each of my partners is having sex with as there is no advantage whatsoever to lying in my situation. That said, I use protection for genital/genital contact with each and every one of my partners and they do as well. I've known about the risk around oral sex and the transmission of HPV orally for some time now (what took this study so long?) and made a decision that I wouldn't adjust my practice to that one. If it becomes epidemic, I may well adjust my practice. I think we would do better to begin focusing on communicating to each person what strains they have and what that could mean. Because HPV is not constrained to just the fluid membranes but also the vulva and probably fingers as well, condom use provides only some protection against this one. If you completely wrap each and every sexual organ (genitals, hands, tongues, hell, even toes) you still aren't provided with absolute protection from HPV. That's reality.

25. Enough with the scare tactics
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 11:35 AM by TechBear_Seattle
First off, the title is misleading (not your fault DSB, you quoted the actual title like you are supposed to.) You do not get throat cancer from oral sex; you get throat cancer from HPV or some other carcinogenic agent. If you consistently follow safer oral sex procedures, you can go to town as often as you and your partner(s) desire.

Second, a 250% increase in the chance of oral cancer is actually miniscule; it is the same as multiplying the chance by 2 1/2. The article states that, normally, only 2 in 100,000 people will get cancer of the tonsils and throat, or 0.0002% of all people, including smokers. Increasing this by 250% means 5 people out of 100,000, or 0.0005%.

So, two things: get vaccinated against HPV, and be consistent in following safer sex practices. Problem solved. :hi:

The chances of "winning" are very low, but you don't want to be the person who gets the prize! Maybe the economics of getting the populace vaccinated aren't there (cost of vaccinating everyone vs. cost of 1 or 2 deaths) but when you're the one spared, the price looks just right.

Doctors' pills give you brand new ills
And the bills bury you like an avalanche
And lawyers haven't been this popular
Since Robespierre slaughtered half of France!
And Indian chiefs with their old beliefs know
The balance is undone crazy ions
You can feel it out in traffic
Everyone hates everyone!
And the gas leaks
And the oil spills
And sex sells everything
And sex kills
Sex kills

All these jackoffs at the office
The rapist in the pool
Oh and the tragedies in the nurseries
Little kids packin' guns to school
The ulcerated ozone
These tumors of the skin
This hostile sun beating down on
This massive mess we're in!
And the gas leaks
And the oil spills
And sex sells everything
And sex kills
Sex kills
Sex kills
Sex kills
Sex kills

- Joni Mitchell

60. "Alternate headline: "Oral Sex Less Likely to Cause Throat Cancer than Drinking"
Since the alleged relative risk is 2.5 for oral sex and 3.0 for drinking/smoking. Of course, that wouldn't have been as convenient for scaremongering.

Even 3.0x is still a minuscule risk when you consider how rare throat cancer is.

65. If your partner is a republicon wearing diapers, do the odds change?
Or, as history shows, is it not at all odd for a republicon to wear diapers?

66. apparently anything "can" cause cancer
but there is not and probably cannot be a study anywhere that proves that oral sex at any point in any one person's life "did" cause cancer. fearmongering parading as science. the bushies will probably be debating this on cspan soon, and dummying up some legislation behind it.
