Have you seen that Army recruitment ad aimed at parents, the one |
|
in which the farmer speaks admiringly of how grown up his son has become and how "he can outrun me"? How about a response ad showing how tall the kid is when he comes home missing his legs and how fast he can run then? I have tons of respect for all the vets who are learning how to walk on prosthetics, but I think we're all better off with the legs we're born with.

1. Yeah, they should add some footage of the legless vets running with AWOL. |

What really pissed me off was when some guy shouted "Yeah!" after one of them. I felt like turning around and saying some smartass comment to him about how great it is, killing innocent people.

4. the ad for the Marines bugs me, too |
|
It opens with talk about how they've 'liberated' countries, then shows little middle eastern kids flipping them the peace sign, handing them flowers, and pedaling their bikes alongside their tanks because, you know, Marines are so cool.
With all of these Iraqi children loving them so it's impossible to think it's such a bloody, cocked-up mess, you know? Best to hide that part so people will sign right up.

5. I hate how they use old footage from World War 2 to stoke patriotism. |
|
We're the liberators. We're the good guys. They're the bad guys.
Sorry, but the days are long gone when the US is welcomed as a liberator. For the vast majority of Iraqis, we're the occupiers who kick in doors and arrest people without trial and torture them.
60 years ago, soldiers died for far greater causes than this.

There are about four or five in this series of ads. All the kids are black, Hispanic, rural white or urban working class. I tend to watch stations with a lot of youngers as their target because I like SciFi/Fantasy/Horror. They run the ads all the damn time. I hate them. I think just what you say...or as Country Joe and the Fish, from my era, the Viet Nam era, said...
"Be the first one on your block To have your boy come home in a box..."

7. I'm appalled at these ads. Expecting parents to change their counsel, their advice. |
