Poll question: Who here would date/marry a Republican
I know this has been asked before but since I just got out of a 5 month relationship with a republican I thought it would be enlightening. btw before that I was in a 5 year relationship with a liberal. Me thinks that I am gonna stick to liberals from now on.
Feel free to chime in with your "experiences"

So that would preclude any close personal relationship.

3. She or he would have to be...
...SOOOOO EXCEPTIONAL in every other way that they'd be a creature so rare that they'd make the golden goose look commonplace. Considering I'm more into talking and discussion than much of anything else, getting past the "I'm a bleeding fucking idiot when it comes to fiscal and social policy" would be damned near impossible.

9. I had a recent experience with a subtle Bush-Bot
She was cute.

And since I'm 52 and she was 53, that's a rarity.
Most women my age look much, much, older.
But this one was sexy, smart, professionally employed, and well...I was ready to say WoW.
THIS one is special.
Until the conversation turned to politics.

W is great.
He's gonna get those terrists coming 'cross the border from Mexico.
Hillary is a bitch.
I like Fred Thompson or Rudy.

She took a cab home.
At least I left her $40.00 bucks for the fare, and it might have been a $10.00 dollar trip.
I'm a liberal.
I believe in giving more than it takes.

No BIG LOVE for me.
BUT...I have standards.
Anyone who loves the Monkey ain't going to get any love from me.

But damn, she was cute.

11. Part of a relationship
is based in common values or beliefs.

Republicans' values are completely out of whack and would be incompatible with my own. They comprise one or more of the following of the following traits:

-Incredibly greedy, with material wealth being at the center of the universe, where those with less are simply lesser humans.
-Religious fundamentalism - a mental illness as far as I'm concerned.
-Intolerant - of gays, minorities, or whomever else.
-No concern for the environment
-Lack of empathy in general
-Often times are spoiled

I could go on, but fuck that. I'd rather be single than go out with such an awful person.

One group is slightly left of center, the other slightly right of center. The differences are only statistical.

We should treat everyone as an individual, not as "one of us" or "one of them".

32. I'll go one step further
and say that after what I've been through in the last few years at the hands of Republicans (both personally and politically) I won't have anything to do with them for ANY reason if I can possibly help it. NO Repugs in my life above the level of car salesman (who you at least expect to be kinda sleazy)...

Once I TRIED to get along with Repugs (being the kind, honest & forgiving liberal that I am)--Those days are O.V.E.R.

I am now reduced to finding out about people's political persuasion before any major interaction--for ex. associates in various projects, including doctors, lawyers and other professionals. It's even down to essential small businesses, non-profits, builders and repairmen. I've done work for several years with a non-profit that was run pretty much like the B*sh administration. Scarred for life. NEVER again. No matter what the service or organization, if I detect an R leaning in any of the principals, I'm out.

This is working pretty well for sorting out the wheat from the chaff. There are some sneaky ones who try to hide it, but generally they're out in the open. I have found that you can actively work to avoid them in business situations.

I know this is 'otherizing' people to a certain extent, but I call it self-defense in these predatory Rethuglican times.

One-to-one in situations that don't matter, I can give em the big cheese. I don't go looking for issues. But I will NOT get involved with them...

Dating/ marry just isn't even in the realm of contemplation.

60. Same here, Mike.
And I think in the past few years he's come to see I'm a force to be reckoned with. He's asking more questions and you can tell the wheels are turning because I've given him so much to think about and consider. When there are things going on in politics that he doesn't understand he comes and asks me. I want him to continue to be that open.

His family has been nothing but loving and accepting of me....and we're in an interracial marriage, too, as is his sister. The partners of two of his gay cousins have been nothing but welcomed with open arms. I love them dearly.

Perhaps it's because they're of the dying "New England Republicans" breed, I don't know.

In fact, the first question I'd ask of any potential suitor now would be "Who'd you vote for on '04?" If they said Bush or Nader I'd run--not walk--to the nearest exit.

Happily married to a recently enfranchised (by citizenship) left-leaning independent for the past 11 years. We still have some excellent political debates since he loves to play devil's advocate (but if he were serious--hoo-boy...)!

52. Happily Married for 24 Years
to a registered republican who, until the 2000 election was non-political. He thought of himself that way because his father was a die-hard R who said many nasty things about liberals. Then I came along. I doubt his dad changed his mind much but after a few 'challenging' conversations, he stopped using certain words and phrases. By the end of his life, he'd begun to come around -- a pity he didn't have 10 more years -- to acknowledging that, though Reagan was God, GHWB wasn't even Carrottop. (Helps they were both in the CIA at the same time and my FIL had zero respect for him to start with!)

But it wasn't me who converted my DH to a more liberal viewpoint -- for that we can thank GWB. That lazy-lipped sociopath has done more to change my hubby's mind than all the yakking I've ever done. John Stewart helps too since the way to my dh's heart and head is through his funny bone.

Old-time liberal here, I never had the epiphany or conversion. Ever since I understood social issues at aged 12 in 1967, I've not changed my core principles. I wouldn't even talk to Republicans back in the 70s and 80s, so I never got to know one well enough to date him.

Sorry: He can eat meat, own a gun, watch porn, be a control freak, be a couch potato, a football fanatic--all those traits are tolerable. But if he has an "R" after his name on his voter registration, ne'er the twain shall meet!

59. Well, yea...
Well, yea... if I like her, you bet your sweet bippy I'd keep seeing her. I don't have some esoteric litmus test that every girl I date has to pass before I allow a second or third date.

Either I like the girl, or I don't. It's never depended on politics or religion... no reason to start now.

As for shared values-- I can hardly imagine any couple that shares each and every value (how boring would that get after awhile?), so then the question becomes, which shared value are prioritized? Honesty, empathy, and compassion for my part, and none of those traits are a party-dependent morality.

Sure, if I had my rathers, she'd be a progressive-- but if I had my rathers, she'd also be well-read, funny, charming, Christian, hot, an early-riser, could cook a mean pasta dish, could drive a stick, makes four billion dollars a year, etc...

If I've never turned down a date because of her religion, then I think it would be a bit hypocritical of me to turn her down because of her politics.

that is something I probably would have not even give a thought to. Now after seeing Republicans in action, after they basically declared war on anyone left of Attila The Hun it would be a cold day in hell, its hard enough to deal with elderly Republican voting family members.
