3. Look at it over the last 5 years
Then the answer is YES!

Let's not get carried away here. The problem with private social security is bigger than this.

10. Once you've lost yours it is gone no matter what the market did over the last five years.
On a day like today you could have wiped out your SS money and would have to start over again from scratch while as it is now you have some security knowing the money will be paid you to you when you retire.

Unless Repugs are allowed to destroy SS (their goal), SS will survive.

25. A day like today will wipe out all your money?
What happpened today that would make you say that? The DOW is up over 6% for the year alone. If you're a long term investor, the stock market is the way to go.

30. You don't invest in the DOW, you invest in individual companies or funds.
Suppose your money was in hedge funds that bought sub-prime mortgages. You could stand to lose everything.

8. This is why I even
took my IRA out of mutual funds.
It did not take me long to realize that sell offs start with a few peolpe making HUGE bucks and the rest of us are reacting to their behavior and losing our shirts.
What a scam.

They might want to try it more often.

13. Excellent point.
I was expecting more of the same when, in early 2005, it became apparent that big, bad ol' Chimpy McFlightsuit and his "evil genius" Karl Rove pretty much sucked at what they were doing, and were very vulnerable when people actually stood up to their bullying and stupidity.

Remember that? It was one time when the Dems called them out on their bullshit and buried their piratization schemes before Bush ever had a chance to properly "negotiate with himself."

Let's just say I don't feel any better knowing that it will have to be paid by a smaller (in numbers) generation that will also have the dubious honor of having to pay for GWB's fuckups.

18. I do have my retirement in the stock market
It is in the TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) and the funds that I am in have had a return on my retirement fund of appx 16% over the past 12 months.

I take just about my entire National Guard paycheck after taxes and have it deposited.

I also have a 401K through my civilian employer that is highly invested in the stock market. That fund has had about a 12% return over the past 12 months.

Just to let you know, a lot of people's financial strategy is hiding their money under the mattress. Stock market = evil.

Welcome.

22. If you're smart, you absolutely want part of it in equities.
If you're dumb, you think that the crashes that happen to the stock market this week or this month, and the bear markets that last years, should determine your investment strategy for something that starts when you're a teenager, and that ends when you're 65.

Virtually every large pension fund invests some in equities. And they do fine. Even in bear markets. Even through market crashes. Because their investment timeframe is measured in decades.

27. yep, and you can bet that if W and his cronys had their hands on it
SS would have been "invested" in hedge funds, derivitives and the like. The ones that have suddenly become worthless. The ones that produced huge fees and bonuses for insiders.
