Does anyone on DU support PBS? They're having
a fund drive and as boring as that is, I'll give you one great reason: Bill Moyers.

2. yes i do but i have to tell you that i'm a little bit pissed because Bill Moyers was not
on due to another pledge drive this weekend so it was a night of oldies music or Elvis or something like that.

They rebroadcast "Buying the War", which I had only seen parts of before.

5. That was your local station doing the programming, and what's on
here now - doo wap. I got Moyers last night. And sometimes, we don't get nationally advertised programming here when other people do. I don't know what the criteria is for making local decisions.

7. normally we do get Moyers but once it's pledge drive it's either oldies or the
guy with all the household cleaning tips. I'm hoping Moyers will be available on demand this week. I will keep giving because even though i boohoo about program pre emption those pbs tote bags make great reusable grocery bags and the coffee cups--i can now have 12 people over for breakfast and everyone has a matching cup.

8. remember back before PBS started showing commercials for carls jr??
when it was commercial free tv, and before pledge drives took up4 months a year?

ah, the good old days, when their shows ran 55 minutes plus instead of 45 or 50.

11. I quit sending them my money. Our programming SUCKS.
We used to have really good programming, but these days it is terrible.

And they quit sending out program guides to donors.

So I donate to Mississippi PUblic Radio instead.

12. Me, too. I actually LOVE Mississippi Public Radio
I liked it better when they had more classical music and less talk, but I'm not the demographic they're after, and some of the talk shows are quite interesting. Felder Rushing, for example. Plus, it's where I get my daily news, since I never watch TV.

13. I love Felder Rushing so much that I'd marry him!
:D

And I miss Dr. Dirt.

If it weren't for PRM, I'd go crazy on my work commute. I love all of the programming--the medical shows, the mental health shows, and of course the gardening shows. And the national programming in the afternoon just can't be beat!

:hi:

18. Well, I missed Dr. Dirt this morning....what's happened to him?
I always have to listen to the Saturday re-broadcast and missed it last week. Is he gone forever? I had figured he was just on vacation, or something. I honestly don't know what I'd do without PRM. I'm listening to the Highway 61 Blues program right now. I try to get everyone I know to support it, but most of them have no idea what I'm talking about. And maybe that's a good thing, now that I think about it...

19. He retired.
Felder said that he would miss Dr. Dirt, and the fresh cut flower arrangements that Dr. Dirt brought to the studio each week.

Everyone in my family supports PRM, and most people at my job do, too. You know Kevin Ferrell? He's related to a woman I work with. :D

23. Well, shucks...I'll sure miss Dr. Dirt, but I'm glad for him
If that's what he wanted to do. As I'm pushing the normal age for retirement myself, it's really something to consider, but I'd still find something to keep me busy, like volunteering at a nursing home or hospice. I used to work in the field, and know how great the need is. With Dr. Dirt's talents & wits, I'm sure he'll find some way to stay busy and useful.

14. They'd have a lot more money if they quit mailing out all these
membership renewal solicitationx. I was getting one a week for awhile until I wrote and told them to take me off their mailing list. And even then it took three tries to get them to do it.

I've given up on them. Now I donate to the local humane society instead.

15. Normally, threads concerning public tv or public radio attract flies and cockroaches.
You must be fairly intimidating, Sister, to keep the vermin away.

16. Last night (Friday the 10th) Bill Moyers was on in Louisville with a
second night (not a repeat of the former program, but rather a second look due to popular demand) on impeachment of Bush and Cheney. If your station did not air this fabulous piece, then I suggest you call them and find out why before you contribute.

24. Absolutely.One year I actually sprang for the Moyers/Campbell Mythology series!
For us it was big bucks, but that series is an absolute classic of television at its very best.

This year I just went for the CD of Anunna singing Celtic music. I've already got one coffee mug. Some kind of emergency kit came last year.

We get KCET out of Los Angeles, and it is truly the only reason we have for subscribing to cable. In our area the only station we can get without cable (or an extremely tall antenna) is ABC.

There are years when I forget to renew, but as annoying as the pledge drive is, I know it's necessary for the survival of PBS. Bill Moyers alone is worth the price of admission.

27. I Still Support the Local PBS Station
For many years I didn't as the station used to make millions in renting out its studios and remote facilities to produce commericals and programming for other stations...they didn't need my money. Things have changed there in recent years...losing grants and federal funding while converting the station to digital (a big expense)

Now that I watch a lot of the PBS-HD shows...Nature and Nova are awesome and Frontline still remains the best American produced television news show. Plus the local station produces their own HD shows.

I look upon supporting Public television as one of the few broadcast bastions left that hasn't been over-run by reality shows and spinners...

Or at least that is what I call them.
PBS is a void to me these days.
