Rove: Bush’s critics are ’snobs’ who hate his ‘common sense.’ In his interview with Rush Limbaugh this afternoon, Karl Rove claimed that the people criticizing Bush are “sort of elite, effete snobs who can’t hold a candle to this guy. What they don’t like about him is that he is common sense, that he is Middle America.” Limbaugh suggest that Bush critics are frustrated the the President “outsmarts ‘em.” Rove argued Bush is far more intelligent than people give him credit for, and is “one of the best-read people I’ve ever met” whose “passion is history.” Listen to a portion of the interview:

...is to position liberals as elitist, bookworm snobs. That way, they demonize liberal
values as the agenda of a bunch of weirdo pseudo intellectuals who trip over their
argyle socks on the way to their "Save the Whales" rally.

Liberal ideals are mainstream. Most people want clean water, fresh air, decent schools,
a lack of bigotry and hate, programs that enrich those who are poor or disadvantaged,
democracy, fairness and peace.

Conservatives know this. The understand that liberal ideals are common sense, rational
and rather populist. They can't have this. They've spent years using talk radio
to distort liberalism into something perverse.

Conversely, conservatives know that their agenda (killing people via war, favoring the
rich, kow towing to corporations over US citizens, harming the environment, cutting
social programs that benefit children and the needy) is cruel and unpopular. They
have done a masterful job of spinning killing into a patriotic act. They've positioned
tax breaks for billionaires as economy-boosting acts.

This PR distortion machine--and the Democrats' ineffectual (and sometimes nonexistent) response
to all of it---has led to the adoption of conservatism and the weakening of the Dem party.
