PHOTO: The dainty bride-to-be and her gentleman groom

I am wondering, certainly this young man is in Iraq, right? Right? Will the nuptials be between his tours of duty? So many logistics to take care of. . .

1. I'm certain they haven't had sex yet. You can tell by the body language.
Surely she's still a virgin, right? I mean, the daughter of America's moral compass surely couldn't have grown up to be a total slut!

Her Mother was a school teacher, for Christ's sake!!

37. "Technical virgins" or "It depends on how you define virginity."

About twenty years ago, at an AIDS workshop h.s. teachers had to attend, we were told that the reason the rate of HIV/AIDS among teenaged girls was rising rapidly was that girls were having anal sex.

The girls, when interviewed about how they got HIV, their sexual contacts, said they thought it was the perfect solution, because it made their boyfriends happy, it didn't make them pregnant, and they could say that they were still virgins, no matter how many boys they had anal sex with. They didn't use condoms, didn't think they needed to.

The state health department was quite concerned about it, as you can imagine.

I don't remember if the "purity ring thing" was going on in the state then. It wasn't where I taught.

22. Did I say that? No, I did not.
We were discussing Jenna Bush, singularly. Not every young woman.

And considering the information we've been presented about her over the years, I think we're pretty safe saying she's not exactly Patrician.

I love it when people expand on someone else's thoughts. Sometimes you just need to take things at face value without embellishing it.

48. As to your first query....
Edited on Thu Aug-16-07 08:34 PM by DeSwiss
...what's wrong with everyone here, I can't possibly answer. So I'll assume you meant it to be rhetorical.

As for whether I think the writers of children's books drink and dance and have sex? My answer is yes. Yes, they do.

As for being sick of shit on DU, I'm not specifically certain of which shit it is that you speak. There are plenty of days when I get fed up with shit on DU as well. But I get over it and keep coming back.

As for the Bushes, I think that many people (like myself) are fed up with the act that they and many Repukes attempt to portray publicly as being staunch upholders of moral behavior. When we know that it is all for political reasons, and in fact most of the Bushes seem to be perfectly amoral, Barbara Jr., notwithstanding. She's used, and been used for political purposes for her family's benefit as well as her own. She's a public person and she knows it.

And to say she's "a 20-something with a lot of privilege, but so do a lot of other people" is a bit disingenuous if not naive. None of those other 20-something's of which you speak, have a father who has his finger poised over THE BUTTON nor are chomping at the bit to bomb Iran. And she will one day become a multi-millionaire. I think that a little more than "just privileged."

So it may very well be her goddamn business how she acts in public. But she's still fair game for commentary as well.

Have a nice day! :)

60. If you took from this that I am mocking women....
Edited on Fri Aug-17-07 02:27 AM by Bluebear
...I am suggesting that this "community" that one thinks one belongs to has turned into a place of over-projection and petty parsing.

In parting, the only lack of "daintiness" that I am commenting on here is Ms. Bush being mauled and dancing with drink in hand at an inaugural ball. It's not how I would act in public, but that's just me. This family holds itself up to be the shining example of Christianity itself, while I can't get married. While I can't serve in the military if I choose. And if she chooses to act in public like this, yes I think she opens herself up to scrutiny. And I stand behind the original body of the post, I don't know why her paramour isn't in Iraq.

But whatever. I'm mocking women and this just isn't my "shining moment". Talk about overreaction rather than giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

64. I would look for a more gender neutral word
if your complaint is that she is stumbling drunk in public, how would you sarcastically describe that if it were a guy?

You wouldn't use the word "dainty" - because "dainty" isn't a requirement for men. The word choice gets at a whole notion not of how people are supposed to behave, but how women are supposed to behave. That's why I'm objecting to it.

We've made a lot of comments on DU about how Jenna and Barbara Bush's roles are to simply marry well into the conservative ranks and produce heirs, I get the creeps looking at this picture and imagining their Rethug fathers, mothers, and grandparents pairing them off....

I don't foresee a happy marriage with these two. I have no doubt they will be forced to stay together for the long haul but I don't see happiness here.
