Activists Demanding that McCain Stop Funding War in Iraq during Occupation Project Kick Off

Washington, DC: 10 activists were arrested on orders from Senator John McCain's office today after members of the peace groups CODEPINK, Voices for Creative Nonviolence, and Veterans for Peace tried to meet with the senator's legislative aide to discuss defunding the war. Activists sang the names of the 75 US servicemen and women from Arizona who have been killed in the war in Iraq, interspersed with the names of Iraqi civilians killed, and collectively chanted "We remember you," after each name and dropped a flower petal on the ground. They delivered framed photos of Iraqi civilians and US soldiers from Arizona who have been killed in Iraq and carried banners reading "Stop Funding War!" and "Americans Want a Prez for Peace". Those arrested include: Kathy Kelly, 54 (Executive Director of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, just returned from two months living and working with Iraqi refugees in Amman, Jordan); Ellen Barfield, 50 (Board Member of Veterans for Peace); Father Jerry Zawada, 69; and peace activists aged between 21-74 years old.... MORe, with photos!

On Wednesday, February 7, Code Pink protestors were among those who made their presence known at a hearing with Defense Secretary Gates:

At Iraq Hearing, Protest Shushed But Not Halted
Thursday, February 8, 2007
Washington Post

Pink-clad war protesters applauded, chimed in repeatedly and stood for hours in the back row holding up peace signs -- but were only mildly chastised yesterday by House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) at a hearing with Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates.

Before Democrats took charge of Congress, such protesters were usually quickly hustled out of hearing rooms by Capitol police. But yesterday they served almost as a Greek chorus. "This was definitely exceptional," said Toby Blome of San Francisco, wearing a pink hat to represent her group, Code Pink: Women for Peace.

The tone was set early on when Skelton politely asked two standing protesters to "please be seated so the people behind you can see." One of them responded that she was a constituent and then complied. "Thank you very much," Skelton said.... MORE

Can we at least have some acknowledgment/support for what these people are doing in the name of peace and to bring an end to this damnable war?

THANK YOU CODE PINK, VETERANS FOR PEACE AND VOICES FOR CREATIVE NONVIOLENCE!

7. Please READ THIS and Support The Occupation Project!
From the CODE PINK home page: http://www.codepink4peace.org/article.php?list=type&type=192

In the beginning of February 2007, the White House will most likely submit a new supplemental spending bill to Congress, and CODEPINK will join with Voices for Creative Nonviolence to launch Occupation Project, a campaign of sustained nonviolent civil disobedience to end war funding.

The campaign began on February 5, 2007 with occupations at the offices of Representatives and Senators who refuse to pledge to vote against additional war funding. See list of Key Dates here! On this page you'll find all the resources you need--from outreach and action planning tips, to supplemental funding bill info, to resources about the cost of war--to make your Occupation Project a success!

Code Pink Activists Call on Clinton to Oppose War
Capitol Hill was also the site of more protest. Activists with the group Code Pink occupied the office of New York Senator Hillary Clinton calling on the presidential hopeful to oppose the Iraq war. One banner said: “We want a woman for peace, not just a woman.” Six people were arrested.

A message from Veterans for Peace:

The Occupation Project
http://www.veteransforpeace.org/The_occupation_project.vp.html

- Written by Mike Ferner

So often we bemoan that "only the choir" showed up. Brothers and sisters, here is a mission tailored specifically for the choir:

Some actions demand hundreds of thousands, like the recent march in Washington. Others call for the use of a small corps, perfect timing and critical placement. VFP members are that elite corps. The timing is this February and March. The Occupation Project is the key.

Later this month, the Bush administration will hand Congress a request for another $90,000,000,000 for the war. Not since the beginning of this criminal operation have we had a better chance of shutting it down. The Democratic majority will not defund the war of their own free will. But that's where the Occupation Project and VFP come in.
Across the nation, people are signing up to occupy their local congressional offices until they get a signed pledge from their Congressperson and Senators that they'll vote against the $90 Billion supplemental spending bill. Veterans For Peace can provide a crucial contribution in this effort. People in peace groups all over the country will take heart when they see VFP members throw their hats in the ring. We can provide important moral support to greatly expand participation in this important endeavor.... MORE

If you can't participate, please donate to these organizations so they may continue the fight.

Over and out!
