The obviously ill and ashen Tony Snow has become the latest rat to jump the sinking Good Ship Chucklenutz, closely scurrying behind the gritty little tracks of Bush's very best bestest friend ever Karl Rove. That kind of slam-bam two-fer is enough to make a Decider reach for the extra large can of beer nuts and valium.

So what was Foxy the Snowman's stated reason for his sudden departure? Was it for the extreme strain the job of Chief Liar and Spinmaster for the Bush Crime Family put on his psyche? No, that's not it. Was it due to the return of his colon cancer and the resulting physically and emotionally draining ordeal of chemotherapy, which is a completely reasonable and understandable basis for quitting his stressful job? Nope, that didn't sway him. Perhaps it was the toll the job took on his family. Given the return of his cancer, maybe he wanted to spend some precious time with his wife and three children during these difficult days. The American People and, specifically, the neocons would certainly forgive him for that. So was that the explanation for his departure? 'Fraid not.

No, Tony Snow was very clear about the reason he's resigning. Simply put, Snow needs more dough. Repeat after me: Show me the moneeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!! Wife and kids? Fughetaboutit. He's got to spend more quality time with his wallet.

Looks like he was spoiled by his previous lucrative deal with Fox News and just can't get by on a paltry $168K salary as a federal employee. Gee, makes you wonder how he expects the rest of us 'mericans to manage on much less, or - Bush forbid - the minimum wage. But I digress . . . . . For all the many legitimate and rational reasons Snow could give as the official explanation for his motivation to step down, he just wants more cash. This might be the only honest thing he's said during his short-lived career in the Bush Crime Family. Gotta give him credit for that.

Get ready for the return of Too Much Capuccino Perino! Personally, I can't wait.

78. Starts next Monday. Monday is a really bad day to start teachers

and kids back at it, though, don't you think? I think starting on a Wednesday or Thursday would be much better -- short week, get the paperwork in, kids get to know each other, etc. Then they get a two day break.

Worked some more (speech therapy) with my oldest this afternoon. Wore him out, as a matter of fact. He is learning to read by sight words. I am hoping the phonics part will gradually make a dent. I make these folders of a dozen or so pictures (high quality) of verbs, nouns, etc. and type up the words, laminate everything, and use velcro to stick the labels on the pictures. He is naming the actions and nouns, and learning to read and match some of the words to the correct picture. We know he's getting some of it. Eventually, I want to be able to give three pictures of (e.g.) cat, cart, camera, and for him to correctly match each word, even though the first two letters for each object are the same. Right now I am using pics that start with different letters. I have purchased some really wonderful photographs (speech therapy products) from Super Duper, scanned them into my computer, and use them as tools.

103. He isn't into "games" much. Very typical for his degree of autism.

But the session has to move quickly, with no distractions, and low level of frustration. Breaks include rewards, or sometimes breaking up the session with "touch your nose, clap three times, clap your hands on your thighs" etc rapidly. It helps them stay focused (see how well I'm doing as a behavioral analyst/ manager, and speech therapist? LOL)

By the time he and his brother are grown, I'll be a jack of many trades and master of none.

142. Sometimes the kids are easier than a cat.

My youngest can't take a pill unless it is something he can chew, or I can take apart. His gag reflex is too strong. My oldest takes his meds with great ease, unless they taste bad. Soooo, I've saved the capsules from the son's meds that I take apart to administer, and use them to administer my older son's meds if it is nasty tasting.

Any mom will develop an arsenal of tricks to use to get the kiddos to do what they need to do.

93. I hate it with a passion. While I was going to college I was living with

my sister in the house we grew up in. I had two rooms in the attic which wasn't insulated. In the winter I froze and in the summer I swealtered - freezing was much easier to deal with. I agree with Graybeard, cold is much easier to deal with. Mr. smokey and I rarely turn on our radiators in the winter.

The War as We Saw It

VIEWED from Iraq at the tail end of a 15-month deployment, the political debate in Washington is indeed surreal. Counterinsurgency is, by definition, a competition between insurgents and counterinsurgents for the control and support of a population. To believe that Americans, with an occupying force that long ago outlived its reluctant welcome, can win over a recalcitrant local population and win this counterinsurgency is far-fetched. As responsible infantrymen and noncommissioned officers with the 82nd Airborne Division soon heading back home, we are skeptical of recent press coverage portraying the conflict as increasingly manageable and feel it has neglected the mounting civil, political and social unrest we see every day. (Obviously, these are our personal views and should not be seen as official within our chain of command.)

The claim that we are increasingly in control of the battlefields in Iraq is an assessment arrived at through a flawed, American-centered framework. Yes, we are militarily superior, but our successes are offset by failures elsewhere. What soldiers call the “battle space” remains the same, with changes only at the margins. It is crowded with actors who do not fit neatly into boxes: Sunni extremists, Al Qaeda terrorists, Shiite militiamen, criminals and armed tribes. This situation is made more complex by the questionable loyalties and Janus-faced role of the Iraqi police and Iraqi Army, which have been trained and armed at United States taxpayers’ expense.

A few nights ago, for example, we witnessed the death of one American soldier and the critical wounding of two others when a lethal armor-piercing explosive was detonated between an Iraqi Army checkpoint and a police one. Local Iraqis readily testified to American investigators that Iraqi police and Army officers escorted the triggermen and helped plant the bomb. These civilians highlighted their own predicament: had they informed the Americans of the bomb before the incident, the Iraqi Army, the police or the local Shiite militia would have killed their families.

As many grunts will tell you, this is a near-routine event. Reports that a majority of Iraqi Army commanders are now reliable partners can be considered only misleading rhetoric. The truth is that battalion commanders, even if well meaning, have little to no influence over the thousands of obstinate men under them, in an incoherent chain of command, who are really loyal only to their militias.
