Did You See the new Threat to Planned Parenthood here in Mo.?
Apparently there is a new Missouri law that would require Planned Parenthood to become like a full service medical provider (meaning that they would have to have a sophisticated medical clinic on site if they are to continue offering abortion services).

Planned Parenthood is mounting a legal defense here in the State of Missouri.

Having to have such a clinic would cost a lot of money. And basically the clinics would have to discontinue operation because of the cost. This would affect both Kansas City and the clinic in St. Louis. Basically we would have no abortion services in the state of Missouri.

I'm not sure just how this will play out in the courts. Probably not a good thing that is the Missouri court and not the Federal court that will handle the case. I have no idea what the real number of people in this state who support abortion on demand is. Certainly the anti-abortion people are the loudest.

1. It's The Back Door Way
to do away with abortion. Requiring full medical staff drives up the costs so that inexpensive clinics cannot operate. But it sounds good to uninformed moderates, why not protect the health of women?

It also shows a nasty little inconsistency in both liberals and conservatives. For once liberals resist safety regulations because they will increase costs. For once conservatives support it.

It is the way of making sure there are no abortions, except those that are medically necessary and performed on women with good health insurance.

2. Then I would assume that Missouri would also have to do without any type of 'walk-in' clinic,
oral surgeons, and the like, since they would also have to become full service medical providers?

3. I don't know. But that would surely be a good argument to look into.

I'm not sure how the new law is written.

I wonder if it would also affect OB/GYN offices? They do all kinds of procedures.

5. Oh - they do. They do all kinds of family planning.
That would probably be all that they are allowed to do under this law. I don't know if they would even bother to stay open under those circumstances.

7. Well, my argument for supporting PP to opponents has always been
that they offer many different services, and abortions are a very small part of what they do. That's the reason I asked the question.

9. Heres the article from the St Louis paper
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/missouristatenews/story/DCAAEE99D8417AE48625733D005C4992?OpenDocument

the last paragraph says it all:

The new law pulls more clinics under the state's umbrella by requiring any facility that performs more than five first-trimester abortions a month, or any second- or third-trimester abortions, to meet the licensure requirements for an "ambulatory surgical center."

==============

Its a law that specifically targets only abortion providers. Even though the Kansas City office performs abortions only by use of drugs (RU486 or morning after pill), they would be required to meet all the new requirements. The Columbia center is looking at $700,000+ for the upgrades required to its facility to meet the requirements. Only the St Louis facility currently meets the requirements.

11. They should start cracking down on Chiropractors and Dentists next
I mean, sure, you go to a Chiropractor when you back is acting up, and you go to a dentist for trouble with your teeth.

But dentists, man, they shouldn't be allowed to just offer a few services related to cleaning teeth. Hell, if you need braces, they can't even do that in house! They send you to an orthodontist! WTF is that?
