Norway prepares to pick up the pieces of an Earth shattered by the US & others...
"The final design for a "doomsday" vault that will house seeds from all known varieties of food crops has been unveiled by the Norwegian government.

The Svalbard International Seed Vault will be built into a mountainside on a remote island near the North Pole.

The vault aims to safeguard the world's agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change."

Thank god somebody is taking responsible action in this world, instead of voting for Lieberman & other republicans.

1. Not so fast...It may be nice of Norway to do that, but it was NORWAY (And Russia) who
destroyed whatever bits of environment there used to be buy running large coal-mining operations on Svalrbard.

Do some research, and you'll find that I'm right.

3. Do you know what "& others" means?
Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 11:40 PM by BlooInBloo
EDIT: Or are you saying it really was incumbent upon me to name literally EVERY country/political body that has EVER harmed the environment in ANY way?

9. No, but...
When you say: "X is cleaning up after Y and others", it is a fair assumption that X is not included in "and others".

10. If by "fair" you mean "does not follow from what was said", then yes.

12. Nope, don't mean that.
It is a fair interpretation...that is, if you are a reasonable person.

14. The fuck are you babbling about? My post discussed Norway and Russia, and had
excactly NOTHING to do with your prase about "Lieberman and others."

Are you always this crabby? And do you always misread replies to your posts this badly?

If so, do me a favor and block me from replying to your posts.

4. Okay.
But that's pretty ancient history -- long before anyone knew about the kind of environmental damage it was causing -- and all but three of those operations were _shut down_ in 1963.

So how long do you hold a grudge? Isn't it a commendable thing that Norway is doing something productively and ecologically positive now?

15. I said it was commendable. Adn, why the weasel words on your part?
"and all but three of those operations were _shut down_ in 1963."

Well, that leaves three still runnng for a LONG time between 1963 and now, doesn't it?

17. "Weasel words"?
So now an effort to be factually accurate means using "weasel words." Sure. :eyes:

Other than that, I took your "commendable" nod to be something of a backhanded complement, merely an intro to the criticism. Sorry if I misinterpreted that.

Personally, I think that what Norway is doing is extraordinarily farsighted and very important, and I wish more people were just simply appreciative.

2. Wow, what a wonderful, terrible thing.
Wonderful because someone is concerned about our continued existence on this planet.

Terrible because they feel they need to do it.

Being Norwegian I was curious

The island is habited and does have a small tourist industry. Very Beautiful.
Don't know about the mining, I wasn't researching about that.
Here is some photos:

20. I agree it's great.
But it reminds me of the racist double standard people have.

Norway deserves condemnation as a whaler same as the Japanesem but no one on DU ever brings THAT up. Wonder why?

22. They DO deserve that condemnation. I agree. But I don't understand why that should
be considered "racist."

I'm genuinely curious about your post, not being sarcastic or specious.

23. Look upthread. A poster specifically mentions Norway's whaling.
And I opened this thread for the specific purpose of also saying something to that effect.

And I have brought up Norway's whaling on DU a number of times.
