Bush to say Iraq is front line against Iran-- (Unilaterally declaring war, again?)

BELLEVUE, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush on Tuesday will describe Iraq as the front-line against Shiite extremism championed by Iran and the Sunni extremism of Al-Qaeda, an aide said Monday.

Bush was due to level the charge in a speech to the American Legion veterans group, the second of two presidential addresses meant to bolster support for the war in Iraq ahead of a critical September 15 progress report.

"The president will talk about Sunni extremism and Shia extremism. Neither represents Islam. They represent a brutal and heartless ideology of death and destruction," a senior aide told reporters in a preview of the speech.

"Sunni extremism is embodied by Al Qaeda and its many affiliates. Shia extremism by Iran and its support of Hezbollah, Hamas, the Taliban and its pursuit of nuclear technology," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"Iraq is at the heart of where these two extremisms must be dealt with," the official said as Bush traveled here for a political fundraiser.

"Al Qaeda in Iraq and Iranian armed and supported Shia militias continue to undermine the Iraqi struggle for security and stability and continue to kill Americans forces," the official said.

. . . so, he admits that the Iraq invasion and occupation is just pretext to attack Iran. I wonder how Iraq feels about being "the front line" in Bush's war against their neighbor?

4. Well that would explain the troop buildup and the bases.

Now we only need another 150-300,000 to do to Iran what we did to Iraq: completely fuck it up for generations and murder 100-300,000 civilians a year for some indefinite period of time. I suppose that will require a draft. How is that going to be sold? Only way that is going to happen is another major terrorist strike inside the US. Draw your own conclusions.

8. Iran's Perspective

Regarding the Aug. 21 editorial "Tougher on Iran":

Contrary to your claim, Iran is not waging a war against the United States, and the recent accusations about Iran's role in sending arms and "explosively formed penetrators" to Iraqi extremists to foment a civil war in the neighboring country are completely false and baseless. Iran has entered direct dialogue with the U.S. government on the issue of Iraq's security in good faith, agreeing to set up a joint committee of experts while at the same time signing trade, energy and security agreements with the democratically elected government in Iraq.

Iran is concerned about the chaos and instability in neighboring Iraq, as well as in Afghanistan, and the leaders of both these countries have praised Iran's constructive, good-neighbor policy toward them.

Iran has challenged the U.S. government to proffer evidence regarding its accusations and to provide the list of Iranian agents who it alleges are operating in Iraq.

While the cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency has been making solid progress, the U.S. campaign of systematic deception of its public and demonization of Iran follows the sinister objective of torpedoing that progress with the aim of paving the way for further U.N. sanctions against Iran.

However, the Iranian people and government have shown solid resilience in the face of unfair and unjustified pressure from outside powers and will continue to do so with the aim to protect their national interest and dignity.
