Senator Sang for Charity a Day After Arrest

Now we know one reason why Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) and the other Singing Senators may have sounded so dreadfully off key (by their own critique) when they reunited on June 12 to perform for the first time in years: It was one day after Craig had been arrested in an airport men's room in connection with a police sting operation targeting illegal sexual activity.

Craig had just flown in from Minneapolis where he was charged with disorderly conduct and interference with privacy on June 11. An incongruous flux of events: One day he's under arrest for attempting to engage in "lewd" activity in an airport men's room, the next he's singing "Elvira" and "God Bless America" at a charity fundraiser....

The officer, who was investigating heightened reports of sexual activity in that particular bathroom, may not have known that he was sitting in the stall next to a singing senator. The lead singer of the Singing Senators, the now defunct quartet, to be exact.

As our colleagues at Reliable Source, reported at the time, Craig and two of the three other former Singing Senators reunited "for the first time six years" on June 12 to perform for a fundariser for the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. Craig, the adoptive father of his wife's three children, has been very active in adoption causes. And he was apparently quite eager to resolve the situation at the Minneapolis airport and make it on time to the adoption benefit. According to the police report from his June 11 arrest, a copy of which was posted on Talking Points Memo, Craig "was worried about missing his flight."

Luckily for Craig, he arrived with plenty of time to spare at the fundraiser the next evening to belt out a few golden oldie favorites with Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) and former Attorney General John Ashcroft. As Reliable Source wrote then: "They began with a patriotic medley, followed with the risque (for them) 'American Made' ('She looks good in her tight blue jeans')."...

2. And just what every adoption agency wants to hear:
The prospective adoptive father was arrested in a public men's room for soliciting sex from strangers. Your Republican Family Values at work for you!

3. Craig was clearly betting that this would never become
public knowledge. How the story was suppressed for so long is what I find especially interesting. I'd love to know how many so-called journalists were aware of it, but chose to protect him. It's very odd that the arrest of a US Senator went unreported.

6. Pretending to be straight for so many years has lost its appeal for Craig.
He may "come out" of the closet after being caught this time.
His marriage is a sham and anyone who lived here in 1982 knows that.

Maybe the next time he goes to sing he can sing "I've Got To Be Me".

LoL

7. There's the excuse he should have used!
No, officer, I was just practicing some songs. You can get really good acoustics in the men's room. Gotta stand with your feet spread pretty far apart to support the tone, though. Yeah.....that's it.
