"It was her first public comments since telling the Prime Minister's wife, Janette Howard, she wouldn't attend the APEC meeting in Sydney because of a trapped nerve in her neck.

News of the injury came as a surprise. The White House had made no mention of it before.

While the decision to cancel her trip to Australia has not scrambled the likes of Bob Woodward of Watergate fame to conduct investigative reporting, questions remain about Ms Bush's travel schedule since the injury occurred four months ago.

Her spokeswoman, Sally McDonough, said the injury to Ms Bush occurred in April, when she hurt her neck and shoulder while hiking in Zion National Park in Utah. "
