Why Craig and not Gonzo threads?
Craig's story involves:
1. Sex scandal
2. a republican

Gonzo's story involves issues and info we've hashed over for several months, he's resigned, congress is still on vacation so there's nothing new to talk about at this point in time.

There may be multiple threads about Gonzo if congress continues with the hearings/investigations - but that remains to be seen.

I prefer discussing the issues involving Gonzales.

there's not much new to discuss until we see what Congress does, if anything....

meanwhile, if I find the craig threads annoying, I'll just put them on HIDE

4. One of the good things
that I remember about Barry Goldwater was that he refused to accept the RNC's plans to use Walter Jenkins as a "campaign issue."

5. You have a good memory.
One of the things about Goldwater is that he was way different from the GOP of today. He wasn't anti-Gay rights for one. Kudos for your memory.

9. Even before Walter's problem,
the RNC had been focused on "slime politics." Though I can't recall the name of it (so much for my memory!), they had come up with a 1/2 hour "documentary" to try to smear democrats, especially in the White House. It was the ancestor of the Willie Horton business, and wanted to blame LBJ's policies for unrest in ghettos. They also had a clip of a woman in a "topless" bathing suit, and while there is no evidence that Johnson opposed breasts, he was hardly the driving force behind the sexual revolution of that era. Anyhow, Goldwater was repulsed by the film. He said he would not appeal to racism in order to advance his campaign. The RNC felt that Barry was betraying their cause.

11. Last evening my spouse mentioned Walter Jenkins

Walter Wilson Jenkins (March 23, 1918 - November 23, 1985) was a long-time top aide to United States President Lyndon B. Johnson. A notorious sexual scandal shortly before the 1964 presidential election ended his career.
.
.
police arrested Jenkins during a homosexual liaison at a YMCA and a reporter at the Washington Star learned of the incident. Johnson applied considerable pressure on the newspaper not to print the story and recruited his personal lawyer, Abe Fortas, to lobby the newspaper's editor. However, the story eventually appeared in the Star and Jenkins was forced to resign.

6. To be so consumed and sidetracked by the Craig situation
is playing into the hands of the Republics, who are happy we're talking about this, instead of how the PNAC'rs are plotting the war in Iran.

Or how Bush wants billions more to continue the failed war in Iraq.

10. Good analysis
I think that's something people forget at times like this is how many times we've actually hashed out a story - at this point there isn't all that many new things to say about Gonzoles.

13. I agree with shiny object theory. Sex is always more fun to talk about
I get seriously depressed when I think about all the dead people in Iraq, the damage to our Constitution, the condition of the environment, the plundering of the public treasury, and the malfeasance in New Orleans that killed thousands of people.

I thank God for Larry Craig. He's put a bit of fun into my news reading. I won't apologize for finding it fun to talk about.
