Rep. Hinchey: votes simply are not there for impeachment

http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/Hinchey_impeach-29Aug07.html

Kingston – “I don’t care if you don’t have the votes”, said one of about 75 impeachment supporters, who had both barrels blazing, not at President Bush, or Dick Cheney, but at liberal Democrat Congressman Maurice Hinchey.

Why? Because Hinchey has not actually introduced, or supported, a resolution to impeach the current administration.

...

Professor and author Joel Kovel said it is no wonder Congress has a lower rating than even the President.

“As a feeling of betrayal by millions of people who had hoped for a congress with real resolve and political courage and instead have gotten what appears to be a cynical and cowardly calculation to let the administration twist in the wind until November 2008.”

“Why can’t you sign on?” asked Barbara Sarah, of the Network of Spiritual Progressives.

Because it would be an exercise in futility, argued Hinchey, who said the votes simply are not there for impeachment, even if he personally believes the reasons are.

“I will say to you very clearly, without any hesitation, that I always do what I think is right, and I am doing now what I think is right, and I will continue to do what I think is right. I have done what I think is right despite of the fact that large numbers of people, including people in my district have said that what I was doing was wrong.”

2. Hey, I like that one! "Treasonists."
Excellent thinking, soothsayer! I'm putting this in my journal so I can find it easier and to remember who to credit. It's a good one. We oughta be putting it to use. A good, colorful, impact-ful word that is sure to put the bad guys on the defensive - exactly where we wan't 'em.

3. I'm with you. But that's EXACTLY what they don't want to do. I
almost think they've agreed on this shit, not to show who's a shitbag traitor and who's not.

4. And if it failed, people would just start placing blame
Let's say that they did start impeachment hearings and it eventually move to the Senate to vote on conviction, once the conviction fails, the same people who cried about impeachment would be blaming the Democrats for it and start calling names.

5. and in 2008, the American people would blame
those elected officials who refused to support it....

This isn`t an issue of whether the votes are there, this is simply an issue of showing the American public who they can trust.

Plus, I think the votes will be there...Its one thing saying in private you won`t support Impeachment proceedings of two murderous war criminals, its a totally different thing doing it in the full glare of publicity...

peace

10. Which 16 or 17 repubs would vote for conviction?
Until there's a credible list of 16 or 17 repugs, conviction will not happen.

13. I'll leave that up to the people of his district
And I fully support my new rep, Peter Welch, despite my ardent wish that he introduce articles of impeachment. I suppose Bernie should be voted out too as he has stated he doesn't support impeachment.
