Windows Vista has issues, driver support and AAR
I can't use my Canon MPF80 printer and I can't listen to AAR online, retired my old sony desktops and bought a new unit from microcenter, I really don't see much of an upgrade from win98 and 2000 that ran on my old pc's...Bill Gates you SUCK!

1. So cannon
has not made a driver yet and you blame Bill Gates? So if Bin Laden attacked us start a war with Iraq? Makes about the same amount of sense

4. My issue is that Vista does not seem to be such an
improvement over win 2000, that driver support at this time sucks...and I would think that XP drivers would be compatible...but hey who am I but a consumer.

31. The printer is 5 years old.
That's a long time in computer years. Vista a huge improvement over 2000. Not so much so XP.

2. I though Vista required the same drivers as Windows XP. All Windows 2000
drivers won't work on Windows XP, which has been out for several years, so why expect them to run on Windows vista?

3. Microsoft Rule of Thumb
Never buy the new OS until at least Service Pack 2 is released.

By then, most of the bugs are corrected.

Software is the only product they can sell you, that doesn't work, you can't get a refund for, and they promise to fix later.

When you're right. The source necessary for vendors to release drivers has been available to vendors for YEARS. They dropped the ball. I see you are old school so i won't be too much a smart ass.

21. And you were right, but not at all helpful.. if fact such a response
only serves to create more frustration and either shows a lack of maturity and/or tries to reinforce one's own feelings of superiority...both which show a side of character I care little for

28. Sure right you are
in both cases, pretty much like people who blame someone else for a problem they have no control over. That is much more mature. See i work in the IT field and use pretty much any platform that is bought and paid for. Linux, Unix, Mac, Windows, you frigging name it. I can't tell the CEO or president "I hate Bill Gates blah blah blah Buy A Mac!" I deal with it with no blame game. See this is what i pay my bills with. When is see or hear people just spouting the "I hate MS catch phrase of the day" for bogus reasons i get a tad upset. See it is not that MS suxx or Unix suxx or Mac suxx, 90% of the time it's the keyboard to chair interface that suxx.

So you see i care little for ignorance and blaming falsely. Cheers!

26. I'm still running Windows 98 SE
In the next few weeks I'm going to have to go through my biannual ritual of backing up all my data, reformatting the hard drive, and reinstalling Windows and ALL my software and drivers due to a bloated, messed-up registry. The whole process takes me about a month. But I'd still rather do that then cast my fate to the Vista winds.

There are problems with every new Windows OS, but this one seems to be REALLY bad.

38. Oh, I've taken my own security measures over the years
But I refuse to be forced by Microsoft to buy some shit OS that's destined to give me nothing but heartache. And I also refuse to invest in some other system (i.e., Apple) that will render all of my accumulated software (I still play Homeworld and Deus Ex, for crying out loud) completely obsolete.

back in the old days, it wasn't really as acceptable. But since releasing the highly-unstable first version of 95, they've really lowered the bar for buggy software. :-(

I want a computer that actually does something, without having to go through twenty kinds of hell to get there. I've used Windoze at work and always find it a very frustrating experience. Why should Vista be any different.

10. I know the feeling. My new computer with XP didn't recognize my modem
The old computer finally kicked the bucket, so I got my a new "all made in China" HP. The only problem was my old DSL modem from 2002 which is no longer supported and the driver which came with the modem never heard of Windows XP. It took me two days to get my fast internet back and of all companies I have South Bell to thank for that because they had a good driver online since the manufactorer stop supporting that old thing.

P.S. Internet sucks on dial-up. Especially if you want to download FireFox at 3 Kb/s

I got an upgrade CD the other day and it's not going to be used until I have a full weekend to ditz around loading patches and squirming with each reboot.

Warts....no thanks. My Macs will do just fine and Windows 2000 Server is as far as I will go for a while.

16. I know you just got a new setup
But this is what windows is. The dependance of drivers and apps is always a pain (and will get much worse in vista), and your printer will most likely be considerewd 'end of life' before a proper driver is ever made. Of course if you mention it in any way your bound to get people who's loyalty is to windows over a human being, what a shame that is but some people are just hollow. On the upside you can look around on the net for hardware that is vista compatible, and printers are cheap. It seems to be the only way to adapt to new operating systems these days.

18. Which Vista? When I...
went from 98 to XP Pro I had to upgrade drivers-- two laser printers, an inkjet and a scanner. Everything then worked a little faster and sometimes better.

And I found out I didn't need the DSL driver disk I had because XP had it all built in-- a wizard that actually worked, and in about 30 seconds. I actually started to like XP with its overall stability and other good stuff. I was spoiled.

Then I got an XP "Media Center" machine when a motherboard blew and found that XP Home, which it is based on, is really a piece of shit-- limited network and driver support and some software that worked perfectly on XP Pro went bonkers on this one.

So, methinks that perhaps the basic low-rent Vista is a marginal upgrade of XP Home and the source of many troubles.

Nothing microsquish does ever works the 1st time...

Got a notice from Quickbooks...
The only version that will run on Vista is QB2007...

If you install Internet explorer plan on upgrading to QB2005; 2006 or 2007. Older versions of Quickbooks will not work...and there are no plans to upgrade the older versions....

Unfortunately as an accountant almost all of the accounting S/W runs on windoze...
Unfortunately no copies of QB for Linux...
Unfortunately QB for MAC's sucks...

27. I've just had Vista thrust upon me involuntarily.
I'd ordered a new Toshiba laptop, which arrived yesterday. The company I ordered from kindly upgraded me without telling me (which is cool, except for the Vista part), so I have a slightly better laptop with an almost twice as big hard drive. But it's also got Vista.

Doesn't seem too bad so far, but I certainly wasn't planning on making the switch yet. Oh, well.

I say that because I'm in the same boat. I run 98SE - Go ahead and laugh everyone - with a hard drive that is now making noises (8 year old Gateway machine). This spring, once Leopard comes out, there's an iMac out there with my name on it.
All the research I've done tells me that if I have to learn a new OS, Apple is the one to learn. It works, I don't need much add-on software, and I am done with M$. Glad to hear you took the same jump.

36. someone needs a hug

i remember what it was like fixing and tweaking my computer on a nigh daily basis. you have my sympathies. i've been there spending hours, sometimes whole days and weekends, trying to get my windows machine just up to "mere functioning" so i feel your pain. nothing more exasperating, i think.

here's my switch story: i got a mac because after the 3rd machine in a year frying up, after much coddling of all of them, and i just gave up bothering with windows. i've ended up quite happy with my new machine. and i know that at any time i can install XP and boot camp on my new mac machine and do any of the stuff i really need -- but as of 7 months there hasn't really been anything i desperately needed. it's just been far more reliable and stress free. i can actually spend more time getting work done and then moving on with my life, i love it. hopefully one day too you will come to such a happy reliable relationship with your machine running Vista.

Linux is coming. Do not resist the penguin. And he's cute, anyways.

I switched some of my less computer-literate officemates to Linux last week, telling them it was "Vista".

They were ecstatic. No problems yet, and they love it. Give it a spin.

39. There's a funny story being passed around
about some young dude who, sick of maintaining his dad's PC, installed a Linux distro and made it a Windows lookalike. So, now his pop is chuffed with his solid new "Vista" setup and hasn't been pestering his boy for fixes. Don't know how true it is, but it's certainly plausible. In fact, I think that sort of sleight oughta be encouraged. Don't tell them about Linux, just give it to them and see how it goes.
