Okay, say the Mormons put a whole bunch o' money and a solid voting block |
|
behind Romney? I can see this happening. He's the Republic candidate with a large backing and a whole bunch of apathetic people looking at a vanilla ice cream cone saying "Vanilla's okay." What's the plan?

2. I think Romney will eventually come out on top. In a scandal-plagued time |
|
for the GOP, he appears energetic, attractive and squeaky-clean, and that will be his main advantage. Rudy, Thompson, McCain, Brownback, Huckabee--all have "ick" factors, either due to personal issues or religious extremism. Romney's worst fault is flip-flopping and Mormonism, but the Mormon thing gets less important as the GOP becomes more disgraced, and the flip-flopping is forgiveable, since ALL of the GOP candidates have some measure of it in their backgrounds--hell, Thompson used to lobby for abortion rights. McCain's a massive panderbear, Rudy can't keep his abortion and immigration views straight from day to day, and Huckleberry used to LOVE illegal immigrants until the xenophobic wing reared its ugly head this spring--changed HIS tune in a hurry. They're all a mess, really, but Romney is overall their strongest candidate--not beloved, but a ruthless, slick, organized fighter. That's what wins.

19. LOL! But, sadly, everyone knows he flip-flops-- |
|
this won't be a shock anymore, after he went on TV proclaiming to be friendlier to gays than Ted Kennedy.

11. The church does not give money to candidates |
|
The church does not give money to candidates they never have and will not do so in the future. There are less than 8 million Mormons in the US and only about 1/2 them are active in the church - so Romney has a pool of less than 4 million LDS members that might financially support him - thats it. The church organization will give absolutely $0 to Romney.

4. If he made it, it would be a Democratic rout. The guy does NOT stand up to close inspection. |
|
Especially since so many of his horrific gaffes are fairly recent, and ON TAPE.
Just play the tapes, over and over again.
If you had to sum him up in one word, this one works:
Buffoon!!!!!!!

what I don't get how ANYBODY can take him seriously... and man, do they ever!
All I can imagine when I hear his name is a poor dog with an induced incontinence problem. They should have to hand out pamphlets when you adopt a dog, "Fido will not appreciate flying lessons."

6. I shouldn't count my basilisks before they've hatched... |
|
but I've got a terrible feeling Romney's going to be our next president. He's definitely the R-candidate that seems most likely to win the prim's. If the repubs stole the last election (if not the last two) why wouldn't they steal this one as well? And that's a serious question--I've been wondering about this a lot, and I'm thinking you guys could give me different perspective on it. Do you think the country would finally stand up and call the repubs on another false victory? I just don't understand how the DSM's and countless contradictions aren't getting people more upset--and I don't think it bodes well for the next election. It's like people don't care that they're being lied to, and I can't think of anything that would tick me off more (aside from systematically taking away my freedoms whilst ignoring my outrage).
Sorry I'm so cynical. I've lurked around for a while, and I'm just starting to post. Hopefully hearing from other people will help me regain some hope.

12. I don't think so. There aren't enough Mormons. And the rightwing |
|
Catholics and Fundies would hold their noses and vote Democratic. They'd rather have a Democrat to COMPLAIN about than have a Mormon with power running the country.
Enemy of my enemy, and all that....

15. Welcome to DU! While I am not a paranoid type I have to concur with your assumption that the repigs |
|
will steal the next election like they did in '04 and 2000. I think '06 was just to make it look more authentic.

13. Mormons vote straight republican anyway. It doesn't change a thing if Romney gets the nom. |
|
And if anything, the other Christian conservative block wouldn't vote for Romney.
Romney getting the nom would be great. He'd be DOA.
