Weekend Highlights
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Miriam Grossman, Unprotected: A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness in Her Profession Endangers Every Student
Psychiatrist Miriam Grossman argues that political correctness in campus healthcare harms students by tacitly approving casual sex. She also claims that girls and women are bombarded with information about preventing pregnancy, but do not receive adequate medical information about fertility risks caused by advanced maternal age. Dr. Grossman speaks at a National Press Club event hosted by the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, where she is a Senior Fellow.
(Sunday 9:15 AM, Monday 1 AM ET)
Ahmed Hashim and Nir Rosen, Discussion of the Insurgency in Iraq
This coming Monday and Tuesday, September 10th and 11th, General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker will deliver their progress report on Iraq to members of Congress. During this event from May 2006, held at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City, Nir Rosen and Ahmed Hashim talk about the insurgency in Iraq and the possibilities of a full-blown civil war occurring. Both participants, who have authored books on the subject, describe the development and changing nature of the resistance forces in Iraq and the Bush administration's strategy to combat them. Rosen and Hashim also discuss the rise of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his army, who the authors say wield a huge amount of power in Iraq now and are responsible for a series of recent attacks on Iraqi Sunnis. Following their remarks, both authors answer questions from the audience. The discussion is moderated by National Public Radio (NPR) foreign correspondent Anne Garrels.
(Sunday 1:30 PM and 8 PM ET)
Mark Skousen, The Big Three in Economics: Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes
From FreedomFest in Las Vegas, Mark Skousen discusses his book The Big Three in Economics: Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes, which describes the contributions of each to the field of economics. Skousen holds the Benjamin Franklin chair of Management at Grantham University and has taught at Columbia Business School and Columbia University. He is the author of many books, including The Making of Modern Economics and The Completed Autobiography by Benjamin Franklin.
13. Today’s picks…
The Last Days of the Incas
Author: Kim MacQuarrie
Saturday, September 8, at 1:00 PM
Kim MacQuarrie recounts the Spanish conquest of the Inca empire beginning with the landing of Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and his army of 167 men in 1532. The Spanish were outnumbered 200 to 1 yet were able to seize the Inca capital, Cuzco and dispose the Inca ruler within a year of arrival. The Incas were forced into the Amazon and a 36-year guerrilla war with the Spanish ensued. The author relays the last days of the Inca empire and examines the excavation of Inca artifacts. Kim MacQuarrie discusses his book at Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver, Colorado.
Feasting on the Spoils: The Life and Times of Randy "Duke" Cunningham, History's Most Corrupt Congressman
Author: Seth Hettena
Saturday, September 8, at 10:00 PM
In "Feasting on the Spoils" reporter Seth Hettena tells the story of eight-term Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-CA), who retired in 2005 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, fraud, and tax evasion.
17. Re The Last Days of the Incas (which I want to read):
I watched a documentary on PBS in early August on this topic. And, it started off with the find of a native burial ground full of individuals who had died violently. As the piece unraveled, the authors came to the conclusion that these were warriors who had been killed by other Incas who teamed up with Pizzaro to put down the rebellion.
In other words, this group of researchers thought it was nonsense that Pizarro put down the rebellion with his guys, and that it was only possible because there were factions in the Empire who wanted to use him as a useful idiot. At least two of these did nearly all of the fighting and that's how the rebellion was put down.
Part of the story turns on the fact that Pizarro had taken an Incan Princess as a wife. And when she became aware that the rebels were going to attack, she sent a runner to her mother to ask for warriors to defend the town from the rebellion.
