I'm not implying a government conspiracy here. It makes sense to me that if Osama died, al Qaeda might want to pretend he was still alive.

I just want to resist engaging in a propaganda war. The battle in our society as I see it is not just Red v Blue, but dogma and willful ignorance v reasoned, critical analysis. Of course it is an outrage that our response to 9/11 was to concentrate on a criminal invasion of an unrelated nation, rather than expending all efforts on catching those responsible. Of course we should talk about that. But I resent the notion that we shouldn't ask whether this guy is actually bin Laden as well. We should ask all pertinent questions, regardless of their PR value.

I would put two pictures of bin Ladin side by side and show how different they were. The beard is a drastic change.

That way you wouldn't be concentrating on the similarities. The two pictures side by side are shockingly similar. What are the odds they would be so exact. Sorry I don't have a link to the pictures, but if you see them, ask yourself why the angle on the hats on the left side are exact? Why is the slope of the shoulders exactly the same?

There are many similarities if you look. Look past the dark beard. That's what they want you to focus on.

Lately what I see happening in this country and in the world can seem overwhelming. The propaganda machine just keeps on grinding out these increasingly surreal new narratives complete with invented heroes, villains and plot twists. This Osama bin Laden character they've turned into our national bogey man (once again) is just a fiction based on a real guy somewhere. And yet we watch and listen and speculate. Am I the only one who's noticed Osama seems to have had no importance in the media for the most of the duration of Bush's war? After he served as a convenient focus of fear to get the public and congress to go along with the invasion, he was promptly forgotten.

The propagandists roll out the ongoing storyline of this war and the myth of a new Amerikan century as if it were some kind of weekly reality tv series. It's as if they have us trained to respond as a audience. Far fetched? I don't think so. It could explain the whole frog in the boiling water syndrome we're all starting to notice. Maybe that's one of the tricks to keeping the American public quiescent. We watch each new installment, like this Osama video for example. We compare notes, speculate, express outrage or disbelief. We discuss our reactions and the relevance of the news item to past and future developments. They get us to chew on an installment for a week or so and then it's on to the next episode. Nothing has changed but the scenery, and the collective Amerikan frog remains passively in the pot; closing in on some unknown boiling point.

We watch the show. We talk about it. We watch it some more the next week. We're television consumers and it's a learned response. When I say "we" here, I'm not ignoring all the hard work that lots of people are doing everywhere. I'm being more abstract about it - more in the sense of a collective the net inertia.

We're being baffled and frightened with so much propaganda these days. I wonder how do we find our balance? How do we deal with feeling overwhelmed with all the cognitive dissonance and confusion? These are questions for me lately.

Anyway, one thing I've noticed about this Osama video - it's triggered a few threads and posts here and there on DU where people are putting things in a better perspective with humor and satire. I have to say I really appreciate that. The incredulity and humor has been a relief for me.

I wonder if the best chance we have right now isn't first for us to step back, lighten up a little, and get our sense of humor back. For me anyway, the strength to overcome fear has almost always been waiting somewhere on the far side humor. I'm a firm believer in Humor as one good cure for the deadening power of propaganda. It works!
