Several members of the group Code Pink, the feminist anti-war group, were thrown out this afternoon from the House hearing after creating a noisy disturbance in the back of the room. They had stood in line early this morning outside the Cannon Caucus Room on Capitol Hill to hear the much-anticipated testimony from Gen. David H. Petraeus on progress in Iraq.

Clad in bright pink T-shirts and buttons bearing messages like “Troops Home Now” and “Women for Peace,” the group had lined up nearly three hours ahead of the hearing to grab one of approximately 20 seats reserved for the general public in the cavernous, austere meeting room.

“It’s a pivotal moment,” said Gael Murphy, the group’s co-founder and a 53-year-old Washington, D.C. resident. “We have been calling for the troops to come home ASAP.”

Fellow Code Pink member Liz Hourican, who traveled to Washington from Arizona, concurred. “This is the most important hearing of our lifetime,” she said. “Diplomacy over militarism. We don’t want a unilateral bully bombing the whole Middle East.”

The group, whose choice of pink as a signature color fellow member Rosalie Yelen describes as “an antithesis to the other colors of war-mongering”, has been calling for the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

They are also planning a peace vigil beginning tomorrow afternoon near the grounds of the Capitol building.

Outside, on the steps of the Cannon House Office Building, one protester made clear his contempt ahead of the scheduled testimony. Wearing a Bush mask, fake devil horns and a red shirt and tights ensemble, David Barrows, a D.C.-based artist and writer, stood calmly waving from the steps. But the message on his shirt spoke volumes: “I’ve got Petraeus by the Soul,” it read. Several additional members of CodePink chanted “Time to Stop the War!” several feet away.

But some of those who stood in line inside, waiting in a roped-off section in the hallway, expressed surprise that more demonstrators did not show up.

Adam Kokesh, of the group Iraq Veterans Against the War and a former Marine Corps member who served in Iraq in 2004, said he hoped the top military commander in Iraq would “be honest” as he delivered his report before members of the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees.

“I have a sliver of hope that Petraeus will say something meaningful and unexpected,” said the 25-year-old DC resident, adding that “just being present” in the room would send a message to the general that individuals like him would be listening closely in the hours ahead.

While it is true that it is perfectly within someone's right to protest, scream, and act loony, there is a time and a place for it. The briefing was a time to hear the general's side of things and his opinion and to allow Congress to question him. Why would you pick a time like that to disrespect one of our officers who, might I add, was unanimously confirmed by the Senate?

And what evidence do you have to suggest that General Petraeus has ever broken the law, authorized torture, and, in general, been an asshole?

The dates in the link you provided say he claimed a "reasonable degree of certainty" that the trailers were WMD labs. He said that on May 13th before it came out on the 26th that the trailers had no connection to WMD. Now if you want to argue he's a Bush crony for not coming out after the fact to clarify it then you have a point.
