I have never seen Chris Matthews look or speak the way he did tonight. Ever since
that exchange between Petraeus and John Warner, where Petraeus admitted that he doesn't
know if the war is making America safer, he seems to be totally disheartened. All the air
has gone out of him, and he said as much tonight. He said he "will never forget the moment."
It's as if, for the first time, he can see our country going down the tubes.

Not a single Tweety-feather anywhere on him, tonight.

25. He looked positively ashen and was very subdued in demeanor. He didn't even try to hide his disdain
for the speech Bush gave, and at one point made a remark about the '36 countries'
that supposedly were helping us fight in Iraq. "What 36 countries? That's news to me. What a beaut that was!"
he said, or something close to that.

He couldn't get over the fact that Bush referred to Petraeus ad nauseum during his speech,
saying that never again should a military person or a diplomat be put in the position of defending
policy that has been laid down by the president. He was really ticked off by that!

33. He was interviewing Biden.
Biden was the one that made the comment in quotes about the 36 countries.
At least in the KO video that was posted here.

4. Until he says something...
...that threatens to raise the stupidity level of the universe to a point where it would collapse back on itself, if it knew how (The level of stupidity being so high that the universe is too stupid too follow the basic laws of nature).

I've seen numerous threads of people asking "Has Tweety changed?". And invariably the answer is: no, he has not.

26. Right you are MadMaddie
Tweety had just come down from his Meds.

He is and always will be a Bush Kisser.

He can't forget how lovely * looked when he was on that ship and the "Mission was Accomplished."

The only thing that Twetty is upset about is KO, he is trying to figure out how he has tanked so low and KO has hit his ratings with a knock out punch.

:bounce:
That's all this is about.

7. Tweety was great tonight, but don't get your hopes too high
that he will remain that way. You never know about that guy. One day he attacks the psycho, the next day he drools and slobbers all over himself when talking about how wonderful he is. Personally, I think he has a split personality.

29. As I said on another thread, I think he's been Botoxed to within an inch of his life.
His forehead never wrinkles, his eyes never change, no matter what emotion
he's expressing. (Maybe his eyes are decals?)

11. It's true. He seemed as if he was relieved that he could finally say what he thought.
It made me think the KO ratings win has opened the door for Matthews to speak the truth too.

19. Good point
For a long time he had to go along with his bosses. Once he reportedly walked out because they forced him to interview a rightwing nut. Now that the climate has changed at MSNBC, he can be more open about his opposition to this war.

32. Just because he is a TV personality doesn't
mean he doesn't have to listen to his bosses. I don't condone a lot of things he's done and said, but he doesn't have as much control as people think he does. Things started to change when Abrams took over and when Countdown took off in the ratings.

17. He was so so. But, did you hear him say..
.. many of the times when he would talk about continuing funding he would refer to it (the funding) as "supporting the troops"?

He is all over the board, tonight most of the darts hit to the left.

18. I wondered what hit him. I wondered if he is sicker.
He looked ten years older and all the piss and vinegar was gone tonight. I thought he might be unwell. I thought perhaps Keith's ratings scared him into taking things more seriously.

Something was up with him.

Keith has said that Dick Cheney defining those who opposed Bush as Nazi appeasers is what set him off. Perhaps Chris has had a similar moment of truth. On the other hand, maybe he's just worried about following Joe Scarborough onto a graveyard shift if he doesn't get his ratings up.

And he has consistently opposed it since.

San Francisco Chronicle
Hail and farewell

Chris Matthews

Sunday, September 1, 2002

. . . But this is my last column. The wisdom of middle age has taught me I can't have -- or do -- it all.

I remember Sen. Ed Muskie the night he won his last election back in 1976. He'd had some vodka, which I sensed he'd drunk fast -- like a Russian against the winter. He said:

"The only reason to be in politics is to be out there all alone and then be proven right."

That goes for good columnists, too.

So I'll say it: I hate this war that's coming in Iraq. I don't think we'll be proud of it. Oppose this war because it will create a millennium of hatred and the suicidal terrorism that comes with it. You talk about Bush trying to avenge his father. What about the tens of millions of Arab sons who will want to finish a fight we start next spring in Baghdad?

Well, that's it for now. You know where I stand.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/09/01/IN133269.DTL

I believe Molly Ivins may be the only other pundit out in front, cards on the table - but I can't find an exact column.
