WTF!? What happened to what Sally Field was
Edited on Sun Sep-16-07 09:55 PM by Texas Explorer
saying on the Emmy show?

Anyone catch it? It went zap on my TV.

She was saying something to the effect that "If it were up to mothers, there would be no -- " then it was cut off until she was finished. Her words illicited a rousing applause.

4. Two possibilities
1. there was a technical glitch like we saw earlier in the show
2. They took advantage of the technical glitch so we couldnt hear what she said (sounded antiwar).

Im going with number 2.

86. A good call is revoking the license held in public trust by Fox News...
When they broadcast lies, disinformation and propaganda to
promote war in the middle east; they are yelling fire in a
crowded theater. Their lies and warmongering violates the
public airways. By broadcasting lies for war with Iraq and
Iran, they contribute to the death of untold numbers of
innocent people. They should be held responsible.

It still comes down to censorship. I thought it might have been a technical glitch earlier when it happened to Ray Romano, but after the Sally Field thing, it's gotta be pure and simple censorship. I'll bet she said something against war in general.

67. Time delaying video/audio to allow bleeping is a whole lot more complicated than bleeping callers on
radio.

Pure and simple, she said GD, and somebody hit the live button.

I don't believe it was for the message, especially since they let her go on about it before she said GD.

Plain and simple.

It's FOX -- remember?

So much for freedom of speech.

ON EDIT: Fox must be paying the censors overtime because they also apparently blacked out Ray Romano when he said something derogatory about Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton. This according to an online news story I just read. Still, this has made the whole show look very amateurish.

Edited on Sun Sep-16-07 10:38 PM by Neecy
Field was censored in the United States - but not in Canada.

"This belongs to all the mothers of the world - may they be seen and valued," she said in a heartfelt speech that was only partially heard by Emmywatchers in the US while CTV in Canada did not cut her off.

The land of the free, my ass...

http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2007/09/the-emmys-reall.html

He also provides the full quote, presumably gleaned from the Canadian broadcast:

"If mothers ruled the world, there wouldn't be any god-damned wars in the first place."

The first clip (big icon) was what she actually said, stammers and all. I thought absolutely nothing about it at the time other than she'd made an idiot of herself for stammering and a hero of herself for blurting out anti-war stuff in this political climate.

It never occured to me a network would bleep it, especially for political content.

66. For what it's worth, my teenager likes a musical group
that had a popular song last year prominently featuring the word "goddamn." It gets repeated 8 or 9 times. They performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel last year, and I just re-watched it on YouTube. "God" was bleeped, but "damn" remained. Same thing when they performed it on the VMA's last year. No "God" - only "damn."

If the powers that be had wanted to, they could have bleeped only the "God." Instead, they cut out half her sentence, which just happened to be an anti-war message - on FOX. Coincidence?

55. When the Dems take the WH,
I am going to demand that they take OUR airways away from Murdoch who isn't even an American. His media empire requires demolition.

Go Sally!

61. From USA Today.com
Brothers & Sisters star Sally Field was ecstatic on her surprise win as best actress in a drama. But explaining why Fox censors bleeped her acceptance speech, Field said, "I probably shouldn't have said the 'god' in front of the 'damn.' … I didn't have a point to get across. I have no agenda, I didn't have any political something I wanted to say. I wanted to pay homage to mothers, period, and especially the mothers waiting for children to come home from the war."

62. She said, If it were up to mother's, there would be no
more god damn war! But they cut her mike and cut the camera from her so the tv audience couldn't even see her mouthing the words!

Go Sally. We like you... we really like you!

63. Why are any of us watching Fox?
If no one watches, they have no power to do this. If no one watches, the Emmys will be moved to another network. To me, the questionable value of viewing the Emmys is far outweighed by the undoubted value of never turning on FOX again. I know it's hard. I hate missing football games. But I hate FOX more.

We have the power to take FOX right out of the picture. If no one watched, they would not be a powerful network, no matter what they own. Why support these enemies of democracy?

Friends don't let friends watch fascist FOX.

65. I seldom watch it but since they were the only station carrying
the Emmy's I watched. I saw that blatant censorship move, probably made to look like an "ahem" glitch. Since it is on delay tape, they could have fixed a real glitch. I am sending a letter off to Fox today advising them that I'm not watching their programs or channels anymore unless it's Ruppert Murdock apologizing for his treasonous actions in preventing free speech, a Constitutional violation, and promising ammends. I know if she had said that Bush was the greatest commander guy ever and all mothers should be proud to sacrifice their children to the war on terror, free speech would have been allowed.

69. go sally
I understand how the networks are paranoid about getting fined by the FCC but I'd like to know why they didn't block "ass" early in the show. She said her comments after 10pm and they should have been broadcast. No excuses.

73. Fox censored Sally because she was being, in their judgment, "obscene".
But they still allow the GOP to run their "news" dept.

Cowards at heart. So strong is their argument that it can't brook public debate or criticism....

76. The weirdest thing is what they did with the camera - totally took it off her and the audience..
they put the camera up on the ceiling. I've never seen anything that bizarre on a network prime time show. It was like they didn't want anyone to see the audience's approval.

It was like they were in a total panic or like they wanted to punish Sally.

At the very least - it looked very unprofessional and sloppy. At the worst it was a terrifying example of censorship.

85. Clearly it was censorship.
If not they would have only "bleeped" or silenced the audio. But they cut to a wide shot of the place from some other point in time where nothing was happening in the venue as it was pretty silent. How did they get that so fast? They must have been prepared for anti-war messages in the acceptance speeches.

I knew her speech was building to something. Now I can only imagine what that was.
