At University of Iowa the debate of the term has been whether to arm campus security. |
|
This has been the topic for weeks now. The faculty backs the notion that arming these people will make campus safer. I disagree. I can see something like this Florida incident happening here only with bloody consequence. I've ssen these guys in action a couple of time and they like the tough guy image. Most of the time, they are dealing with drunk students. http://media.www.dailyiowan.com/media/storage/paper599/news/2007/09/05/Metro/Faculty.Group.Backs.Guns.For.Police-2950428.shtml

1. If we're talking lethal w/out non lethals: Yes |
|
Now settle down and listen to my explanation.
The reason they want to arm Campus Security people is because of the Virginia Tech tragedy. Most campus police people have actual police training and credintials(Or atleast the ones at my campus do). But it's obvious you don't want them to have non-lethals like the Florida Pinheads do because they abuse the power to use them and hurt people unnecessarily with them.

2. They already have been issued weapons, but need permission |
|
to carry them. They are required to get permission from an administration person and their supervisor. These guys just want to pack guns. I will tell you this much. I know of incident in which security did not take the time to investigate and for which the person falsely accused was thankful they weren't armed.

3. I don't have a problem with campus police officers carrying |
|
guns. I'd like them to be in a position to be able to handle potentially critical situations.
The problem right now is not that campus cops are shooting too many students.
The problem right now is campus cops are tasering too many students -- especially when there are 5-6-7 officers on a single unarmed person. They should be more than capable of handcuffing an individual using arrest control techniques.
