...and I must say congratulations to Salon, who (several years ago) devised the system that the NYT now appears to be using: make people look at an ad, then let them into your darned site.

Not sure what your point is. If you're saying the ads are bad, well yes it's a bit annoying. But businesses have to make revenue from somewhere, and Salon was the first to figure out a method that allowed people to read their content free while still managing to get enough revenue to survive. I thought it was a creative solution to their problem, and I don't mind a short ad -- I understand what the tradeoff is.

I'm saying I make sure I see those ads at least once a day as my way of supporting Salon. That's why Salon is my home page.
