i'm 100% sure this is a dupe, but i'm late to the party and pissed. throw in the habeas corpus and it's been one fucking great day for democracy.

goddamit

~snip~
WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 — Senate Democrats fell short late this afternoon in what was seen as their best chance to shift the course of the war in Iraq, in a vote on a measure to require that troops get as much time at home as they spend overseas before being redeployed.

The vote on the measure, offered by Senator Jim Webb, Democrat of Virginia, was 56 to 44 in favor — four less than the supporters needed to prevent a filibuster. The outcome was almost the same as that in a vote on the measure in July, when 56 senators voted in favor and 41 against.

9. The level of Orwellian control exercised is simply amazing, considering it is likely
self-imposed.

Wow. At the Old Grey Whore (to use Bartcop's term) yet. Amerika's Flagship Opposition Paper can't even bring itself to call a filibuster a filibuster.

:wtf:

Some part of me wishes I could read the histories of this time to understand just what happened here? Are there Bushies in the NYT who are writing these headlines?

How can this happen again and again without anyone taking notice?

I have long ago tired of asking myself these questions. It simply is.

8. Yep, looks like the Democrats did a good job rounding up votes....

these filthy bastards blocking the vote should lose every F***g election next time around. I hope they all pay dearly in their screwed up little red states. What's the saddest thing of all, they hate Democrats more than they can't stand Bush. They will give us NOTHING. They are COWARDS and LIARS and THEY ARE SO OVER.

:grr: :grr:

3. FUCK Republicans.
I can't fathom why they can't even let our troops have some time with their families in-between fighting their heinous war. Then it came to me. More dead soldiers equals more widows and orphans to prey upon It's what they do.

the way the headline reads it sounds like the democrats lost where the truth is the republicans BLOCKED THE VOTE. all their rhetoric about 'support the troops' is ludicrous.

11. I feel really bad for Webb
He fought hard for this one. He is a good senator and we should be proud of him for his attempt. The republicans and Lieberman do not support our troops or their families. Maybe the republicans should try going over to Iraq for 15 months with only a few months off to be with there families.

12. Interesting, isn't it...
...the headline I mean: 'Democrats Fall Short in Vote on Home Leave for Troops'

Another possible headline would be, 'Republicans Filibuster to Block Home Leave for Troops'

I mean, back when the Dems were in the minority, all of these tussles were framed as them obstructing things, and the rabid right wing went into their "nuclear option" attack mode. Now I don't want to see the Dems threatening a nuclear option; but dammit, I'd sure like to see more even handedness when reporting on this stuff.
