It's interesting how Alaska was still part of Russia in 1867. Are there any areas around the world that could possibly become part of the US in the future?

Here is another question: Would a state ever sell one area of the state to another state? Sometimes I think parts of states belong more with the neighboring state. For example Eastern New Mexico is more like Texas and the El Paso area is more like New Mexico. I think it would be cool if the US bought Baja California from Mexico. I love traveling there but the drug check points are scary not to mention that whole area needs to be cleaned up.

Also, could Puerto Rico ever become a state?

These may seem like strange questions but it's neat to think the U.S. could be different in the future.

can engineer another RePuke Presidential win they might well stick a "FOR SALE" on some parts of our country. They already have us in hock up to our eyeballs with China, they are also selling some infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc) so why not a state or two?

6. I think Mexico offered Baja California during the Gadsen
Purchase of 1853 and the US turned down the offer.

No more Leach or Nussle in the Congress.

7. We already took California and Washington state off their hands...
The most reasonable scenario I've imagined involves Quebec separatism; if they seceded, I could very well imagine the Canadian Maritimes petitioning to join the US.

8. Leaders in both countries would be crucified if they tried
because both have a good sense of their own nationhood and would not want to give it up.

There will be economic unity, though, as trade barriers will come down permanently (or until the disaster has run its course).

12. That Depends. Canada Would be a Bunch of New BLUE States for Sure
I think the same is likely the case for Mexico.

If elections still matter, maybe we should let them have their union and then we'll have enough votes to do things right.

11. Realistically, no.
Nationalism is too strong a force in the modern world; the days of outright conquest are probably over for the time being. And the entire world's more or less claimed.

Second question, no. They have no reason to. Aesthetics are not enough to compensate for the national headache that would cause.

Third question, yes, it theoretically could, but neither us nor them want to see that happen enough to make it happen. It'll probably just stay a commonweath.

15. Texas and parts of New Mexico used to be...
part of Mexico. California has its own Spanish/Mexican history, too. And we almost went to war with Canada over borders and water rights quite a few times.

A North American Union, similar to the EU, appeals to me but will never happen until the US loses its superpower status and goes back to just being another industrial country. the EU had to wait until Europeans gave up the idea of going to war with each other to see who would run the world, and we will have to wait until we stop trying to run the world.

For those who might say there is too much national identity or cultural difference here for a union, think of the national identities in Europe, or the cultural differences between Danes and Portuguese.

Puerto Rico as a state? Could happen, but it's up to them. So far they've been voting against it.
