I give to DU when I can rather than monthly as some folks do. When able - I give a little more (and give it for several months - or for the year given on my circumstances at the time). For those, like me, who might have given a little later in the year - I urge you to give during this drive, and then find posters you appreciate - but who perhaps are not 'universally' recognized or appreciated and let that poster know they are appreciated per the heart.
The heart and numbers of hearts and individual poster has shouldn't be a popularity contest. Rather the widespread view of tons of hearts for tons of Duers - ala the appreciation of so many different posters - would be a wonderful goal. If you are like me - who tends to give in chunks rather than a smaller monthly amount - and if you are able - I encourage you to partake in this cycle's fundraiser - and to spread the 'wealth' per sharing the hearts. It will make someone's day.

1. Couldn't have said it better myself. I, also, only give once a year |
|
as I am retired and sometimes cash is a little low, but the heart I gave out this time were for people who over the years on DU have moved me in some way, either by what they do on DU everyday or something they said just once. It felt good to give them out that way and not give them to the most popular posters. Thanks for posting my thoughts.

8. Nice to see it grow into a tradition. |
|
especially if it is a broad reaching appreciation, rather than a popularity thing (and a leave folks out thing.)

7. I would... but I have a little heart inside my tummy I have to save up for. |

She's gonna need some onesies and a changing table and diapers and me to stay home with her (with no pay ) for a short time.
I love this fundraiser, though. It's cute. :)

What a wonderful 'development' :D
I have always given at the times that work for me (bigger chunks from time to time rather than monthly) that means that when the time doesnt work - (per saving up for onesies, and the rest) isn't the time to give and no guilt. That also recognizes what I can give annually is much more than I would have been able to give a number of years ago. Give what you can when you can, knowing that this means different things at different points of life.

16. Clark2008!!...Congrats to you!! |

...I feel so foolish...I thought you were a guy...what an idiot I am, I should have just looked at your profile. (for the life of me I can't get my profile to work, one day I was fooling around with it's settings, and now it locked...I have been called a troll because of that)
Well anyway...You're such a nice person....Happy Valentine's Day to you and your little buddle of joy. Peace. :)

11. About popularity contests... |
|
Edited on Sun Feb-11-07 11:10 PM by intheflow
You know, this is my normal mode of operation, donating hearts to under-appreciated DUers. But this year I gave a heart to someone who has a lot of hearts already, just a few hours into this drive. I hesitated, considering this very point--with so much love already, isn't there someone more deserving?
But I gave it anyway. I met this DUer at a meet-up after knowing them virtually for 2 years. I know that they deserve the heart for two reasons: one, that person is an amazingly compassionate person; and two, that person has had some significant losses this past year.
So I guess I'm saying that sometimes when people get a lot of hearts, it's not a popularity thing, but a solidarity thing.
Then the rest of my hearts went to some of the under-appreciated among us. :hi:

sentiment - and one of the hearts I have given - was for a similar reason - though I have never met her in person - out paths have crossed so many times over the years that it 'feels' like we have met. It was a star of solidarity.
Point well taken. :hi:

15. I'm Searching Right Now For Posters I Respect That Have No Hearts Yet So They Can Feel The Love. |
|
Problem is, they all got friggin hearts already! LOL
So now, I keep scanning threads to find some and I'm running out of time before my wife kills me for not getting into bed on time :)
I'm gonna give it a few more minutes but if not, no reason I can't try tomorrow.

17. I love the Valentine tradition here on DU. |
|
Last year there were those who went out of their way to spread the love.
Thank you to whomever tossed a little sugar my way! It did indeed make my day! :loveya:
