Dixie Chicks lead Grammys with 5 awards

Update: Headline now reads 5 Grammys Mark Dixie Chicks Comeback

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer

LOS ANGELES - The Dixie Chicks completed a defiant comeback on Sunday night, winning five Grammy awards after being shunned by the country music establishment over the group's anti-Bush comments leading up to the Iraq invasion.

The Texas trio won record and song of the year for the no-regrets anthem "Not Ready to Make Nice." They also won best country album — which was especially ironic considering that the group has said they don't consider themselves country artists anymore.

"That's interesting," Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines crowed from the podium after winning the country award. "Well, to quote the great 'Simpsons' — 'Heh-Heh.' Just kidding," said Maines, adding, "A lot of people just turned their TVs off right now. I'm very sorry for that."

Emily Robison noted, "We wouldn't have done this album without everything we went through, so we have no regrets. I thank everyone who voted for us."

1. You go girls
It's is an awesome turnaround for the Chicks. I am so proud of them and so glad that the right wings attempts to destroy them have blown up in their faces.

Come back to Oklahoma Chicks, we miss you.

Comparing it to the Simpsons' "ha ha." They are all otherworldly talented, and I'm a proud owner of all their CDs.

I just got on the Obama bandwagon, and I heard on the USA Today website that Natalie has done the same.

19. I liked Toby Keith's songs and used to sing a few of them
and he is supposed to be a Democrat from my homestate but when I saw him using a doctored picture of Natalie mains hugging Saddam Hussein in his concerts on a giant screen and attacking mains as unpatriotic he lost me and won't ever get me back.

I noticed he wasn't up for anything this year.

This is the picture he was using and he can go fuck himself for doing it.

OMG they are dumb as hell.

I was very pleased that the Chicks won so many awards, and I have always loved Dan Wilson, who won the grammy alongside the chicks for best song. He was great in Semisonic and before that Trip Shakespeare, and has a great solo career going now. This song DID sound different, not the usual Dixie Chicks sound, and I credit him.

Their arguments against the Chicks is similar to the one used against Air-America. They do not mention the boycott or the advertising blacklist when citing low records sales, or audience, in the case of Air America.

The grammy awards were not exactly a republican bastion before this. What is different this time around is that the awards tend to go along with sales. Whoever sells the most gets the award, nice to see them vote with their heart and not their sales charts for a change.

67. Republicans are
always angry about something, usually race mixing. That's why they're babbling idiots. The next time you hear the term staunch Republican, think rabid Republican.
Anyone who thinks a war in Iraq will stop the Saudis from funding suicidal lunatics has thought disorders compounded with loose associations. How long will they want to debate the size of the Speaker's plane? It's really not the size of the Speaker's plane that has them upset. It's the size or lack thereof of certain anatomical appendages on their part.

Buy the album with which they won those Grammys!

Title: "Taking the Long Way"

I got mine online as soon as it came out. They weren't selling many then. I love all the other songs on the CD besides "I'm Not Ready to Make Nice."

93. They'll get my support.
I got "Taking The Long Way" recently, plus a concert vidio from 2003. The vidio had most of the "Home" album, and it was great, so that's the next CD for me. I also want "Shut Up And Sing" on DVD.

And welcome to DU!:hi:

And not just saying it because they spoke truth about smirk - it really, really deserved to win awards. And it's not kommercial kountry like Toby Keith, Reba, Rascall Flatts, etc. It's a blend of bluegrass, pop, rock, singer/songwriter americana styles. It's original and well written by artists who sing from the heart and are top notch musicians. Great art deserve to be supported!

Give yourself a treat for Valentimes Day - buy this CD!

Its a great song, something with teeth and not just yee-hah, kneed jerks stuff, brings tears to my eyes and rage to my mind everytime I hear her sing....

It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

87. Sometimes, the remake is better than the original
Just like Six Penace None The Richer's version of "Don't Dream It's Over" is MUCH better than the Crowded House version...

And sorry, in my opinion, Stevie's "Landslide" is not nearly as good as Dixie Chick's version...

At least we argee on politics though, LOL....

88. The triumph of politics over music.
Sure we all alove the Chicks because of their stand on the war, on the Bushies, etc. And Long Way Home is a great album. But this was payback, pure and simple, for what they've been through over the past several years. LWH was, doubtless, the best country album (because there hasn't been much real country music recorded lately). Was it a better album than John Mayer's Continuum? Personally, I don't think so (and Mayer's politics aren't too bad either). Was DC's version of Landslide better than the original? Hardly. Is the Chicks' banjo player the best to ever pick up the five-string? Not a chance.

I congratulate the Dixie Chicks, but some great artists got overlooked in the DC hysteria this year.

100. Grammy for "Not Ready To Make Nice" -
not bad for a song of which the chord progressions sound er... quite similar to "Another Day In Paradise" by Phil Collins.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Dixie Chicks (I've got two of their albums), but the first time I heard "Not Ready To Make Nice", that was the first thing I noticed. Check it for yourselves: It's most obvious in the chords of the bridge between 2:13 and 2:24 of the song, but the similarity runs more or less throughout the whole song.

daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
and how in the world can the words that I said

So very powerful.

I'm trying to put the night into perspective, and if I were conservative, I would look at last night's Grammys as the end of all that is good. Al Gore was celebrated as were the Dixie Chicks. John Legend sang a anti-war song that was beautiful and heart-wrenching, and Mary J. Blige kept thanking God for making her a better person through self-awareness. I mean it was like a DNC meeting when Don Henley congratulated the Dixie Chicks after himself being celebrated as an honorable Texan.

And need I mention the interracial dancing between Shakira and Wyclef, and then Justin Timberlake and the woman who won the singing challenge. I bet their heads were about to explode.

And I'd like to think about what I would do if the roles were reversed, and I must say I wouldn't like it a bit.

But--quoting the Simpson and Natalie Maines--"heh heh"--I'm not a conservative! And I loved every freakin' second of it. LOVED it. Loved Al Gore getting a standing ovation--loved the Dixie Chicks winning every single award they were nominated for--loved John Legend because he brought a tear to my eye--and even I shook my booty right along with Shakira.

Freakin' fantastic show they put on. It lifted my spirits, and, for a moment, gave me hope that this country is not all lost.
