2. I have a question unrelated to the Grammies, but related to...
Al Gore... How the hell did Al get sucked into having a ticket with Joe Lieberman as his VP? That is very troubling to me still today.... Shit Joe boy could have had done, and then assumed the top position......

4. The theory was that the country was so upset...
...by the Monica Lewinsky scandal, that Al Gore needed someone on the ticket who had criticized Clinton for Gore to distance himself from the scandal.

One problem with the theory is that Bill Clinton had a high approval rating during the scandal.

11. The other theory I have heard,
is that Gore knew he was alienating (and breaking with) the DLC crowd by running a populist campaign and so he wanted to have a DLC type on the ticket in order to have the broadest Party support possible.

Of course, Lieberman was not radioactive as he is today. The choice was effective in a significant way, in that it got very good press and added to the very big bounce Al got coming out of the convention, around 10 points, if memory serves.

I was OK with it at the time, but had been hoping for Edwards. Since then, Lieberman has earned a tremendously bad reputation and there is no chance that Gore would pick him again. He basically dismissed Lieberman when he endorsed Dean. I really enjoyed the whining that Joe then did because Al hadn't notified him before the Dean announcement. Swwet!

24. Yeah. It's important to note that 2000 was a VERY different time.
Before Iraq, before 9-11. The basis of most of the objections many of us have to Lieberman didn't exist yet. And as has been noted, he criticized Clinton in the Senate, so he was deemed to be an inoculation against the perceived election-destroying rampages of the mighty CLENIS.

I didn't think he was the greatest choice then, but those were far different times. Can't hold who Joe is now against Al Gore. Gore did his part by endorsing Dean in 2004; That was a clear enough "break" from Lieberman for my taste.

News of Lieberman's selection was followed by a leap in the polls for the Democratic ticket. Lagging by as much as 19 points in opinion polls after the Republican National Convention July 31 to Aug. 3, Gore was just 2 points behind Bush in a USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll released yesterday.

The survey, taken Monday night, showed Bush leading Gore 45 percent to 43 percent. The same polling group had Bush well ahead Aug. 5, with 54 percent of the vote against Gore's 35 percent.

An overnight ABC poll showed that 60 percent of voters approved of Gore's choice for vice president, although two-thirds said they didn't know enough about Lieberman to make a judgment.

17. AFP:Gore's popularity
Surprisingly, one of the biggest cheers of the evening was for former vice president Al Gore, who presented the best rock album award with Queen Latifah.

"Wow. I can't believe that. It's unbelievable. I think they love you man, you hear that?" Queen Latifah said as the audience screamed for Mr Gore, who thanked the musical community for its efforts in protecting the environment.

Mr Gore received a similarly rapturous reception at the MTV Music Video Awards last year and is up for an Oscar later this month for his global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

Considered the music world's equivalent to the Oscars, the Grammys offer prizes in 108 categories covering over 20 genres, including pop, rock, gospel and rap.

It was great to see him doing this (love the man in black look) and I surmise he did it as well because of the worldwide concerts coming up in July to get out the information people worldwide will need in order to address global climate change, and also because Melissa Etheridge was up for a Grammy for the song from An Inconvenient Truth. I wish she had won but a song from "Cars" did. His comment did make reference to those in the entertainment industry who have cared about the environment, so perhaps he was also lining some acts up. But I guess the environment really isn't as important as posting polls from 2000 which have nothing to do with this appearance. Good to see him enjoying his life too as well as devoting it to truly doing something important for the planet.

Al Gore gets rousing welcome at Grammys
1 hour, 10 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Perhaps unusually for a politician, former vice president Al Gore was welcomed with a massive cheer when he appeared at the Grammys on Sunday to present an award at the premier music ceremony.

Gore, who has been out of the mainstream political scene since he lost the US presidential election to George W. Bush in 2000, was greeted with a huge cheer when he took the stage with singer and actress Queen Latifah.

"Wow. I can't believe that. It's unbelievable. I think they love you man, you hear that?" Queen Latifah said amid the cheers.

"I think they're cheering for you." Gore replied. "But it is still a thrill for me to be here with the musical community that has long been at the forefront of the effort to protect and renew the environment."

Looked like a lot of hot lights used in a big area. Would be interesting to know. I can't help but wonder how many lights were used that were not CFL... Limos that were not hybrid... all the hair dryers used and other appliances, instruments, etc... Seems to me people should be starting to walk the walk in the entertainment industry if they are going to talk the talk.

52. Best band around today.
Al's a lucky man. I would love to present an award to RHCP, even if it was a corporate award like the Grammys. Just meeting them would be quite an experience. Kiedis and Flea are big time liberals. They write some things about how harmful the Hollywood consumerist culture is to this country (see 'Californication,') as well as stuff about racial harmony - 'Power of Equality.' They love New Orleans and played at a benefit after Katrina.

60. Not a big fan of RHCP .....
But Flea IS the bomb ....

RHCP has become too soft ..... there is too much 'easy listening' stuff for my taste ....

Toss Flea into Rage Against The Machine, and THEN watch the fuck out ..... That would be golden ....

Dont get me wrong; I do appreciate their Liberal leanings, but their music has become a bit humdrum for me .....

61. I'm not very familiar with
RATM. I guess I should check them out. I think Flea in any band is something to watch out for. He's simply the greatest bass player of all time. But you have a point about them going soft. Flea used to do this thing called "slap-bass" that's really awesome, but in 1990 he decided it was "inhibiting him from fully realizing himself as a musician." I can understand that, but that doesn't mean he has to abandon it all together. The last song I know of that he used that technique in was 1999's "Around the World."

I normally don't tolerate that soft stuff myself, but these guys are my favorite band, so I like to see where they go with it. The song "Hump de Bump" on their last album was written specifically because people asked them to "bring back the funk." They're becoming a little melancholy, but that's just where they are in their lives right now. I can't fault them for that. However, I have to disagree with the Rolling Stone that their last album was their best. Nothing could ever beat 1991's "BloodSugarSexMagik."

59. Flea ..... BEST Bassist in Rock .....
Gore .... BEST choice for President .....

Yeah ... I know: Les Claypool is just as amazing, but he simply doesnt have the 'gravitas' and artistic penetration as Flea .... I still get all goosepimpley when I hear RHCP's cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" .... Flea's slap lines were seminal, and begat many young aspiring bassists ....

Yeah ... I know: Gore WONT run ... but I still love him ....
