1909 The NAACP, an interracial organization devoted to civil rights and racial justice, is founded in New York City following a race riot in Springfield, IL.

1934 William Fenton "Bill" Russell who will lead teams to 2 NCAA basketball championships, 1 Olympic Gold medal, 11 NBA Championships, is born in Monroe, LA. Russell will become the NBA's MVP five times.

1989 Barbara Harris is consecrated the first female Bishop in the Episcopal Church. She is elected suffragan bishop in the diocese of Massachusetts
