I know the Grammys are about music, but I was seriously disappointed in the lack of politics there. |

I mean, GORE was there! What a perfect opportunity to say something about how different things would have been had the vote been allowed to be counted in Florida, or to say how great it would be to re-elect him in 2008. Nothing.
Admittedly I was in and out of the room but I don't believe I missed anything political - please correct me if I'm wrong.
Still a great show - GO DIXIE CHICKS!

1. From what I hear, he didn't need to say anything political |
|
Just turning up got him all the cheers in the world, apparently

2. Now if an artist had said "Bush is great" |

I have little doubt that you and others would be bitching about the show being too political. It is all about music. Let's leave it that way.

3. Seems to me it was said without words |

Some very loud statements have been made that way.

4. One of the Dixie Chicks at the end said something along the lines of |
|
She appreciated the awards because it was the members of the recording industry speaking up with their vote. She gave this thinly veiled reference of saying a vote for them was a vote against the shrub.

5. The Chicks' sweep WAS inherently political. . .don't ya think. . .? |
|
They were vilified for free speech. . .lauded, awarded, and applauded for unwillingness ". . .to make nice."
It sure felt redemptive to me at least.
Criticism of * was validated in a big way.

6. Sometimes the politics is in the music |
|
and it can even be visual. There was a lot of politics at the Grammys last night. It was superb.

7. That's funny because I thought it was all about politics! |
|
The artists speak through their work and the Chicks walked away with most of the goods as a reward for speaking out. Gore was the icing on the cake! I think sometimes we get used to all of the chatter because we are out here hashing everything out nine ways to beat the band. Don't be disappointed. Peace, Kim

8. Ludacris gave a "big shout out" to Bill O. Reilly |
|
Seriously. To Oprah and Bill O. We were shocked. Rewound it several times just to make sure we heard right. Anyone know what that was about? The only thing I could come up with was maybe Bill had him as a guest on the show??

as one DUer already pointed out, that was total sarcasm. Bill O had criticized Ludacris' Pepsi ad. Here's a link http://www.boycottwatch.org/misc/OReillyVSPepsi.htmAdd link.

17. Thanks - I did see that other thread |
|
and once reminded, I did vaguely recall hearing something about that but I'm not a Ludacris fan, so it didn't impact me much at the time.
Ludacris should have made it clear that he was being sarcastic. Looks like we were not the only ones who didn't get it.

12. The Words Were Best Left Unsaid...The Awards Spoke For Themselves |
|
Every time the Chicks won, I was expecting Natalie to take a good shot, but she was subdued, and in the long run, it's a good thing. The fact they won as many awards and got such a tremendous ovation was a recognition of the stand they took and how right they were. Nothing needed to be said...not a single person tuning in didn't know.
Had someone opened up, be assured the corporate media (especially Cheap Channel) would be all over this to not only diminish the accomplishment of these ladies but also to create yet another distraction from the real news. If anything, the lack of controversy was a good thing...I'm so tired of everything being turned into some partisan passion play.

They were rewarded for great work, their courage and the drama surrounding it added to it's cred. It wasn't just about rewarding them for speaking out.

14. The fact that the crowd went NUTS as Natalie Maines belted out these lines ... |
|
... from "Not Ready to Make Nice" ...
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her/ daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world can the words that I said/ send somebody so over the edge,/ That they’d write me a letter/ sayin’ that I’d better/ SHUT UP AND SING or my life will be over?
... that showed me how political an evening it really was. The way Natalie threw her head back after singing those lines seemed like a real catharsis for the Chicks, after all they've been through for saying a handful of words that even many Republicans now realize were absolutely spot-on.

looked kind of silly.. all dressed up in Gucci suits without a thought or a word to say.... about the state of the world they live in. I guess that's what the bodyguards protect them from.
I feel like there is gonna be a new wave of political songs coming soon. Here's to the brave artists. :toast:
