Maybe three is a charm. On Thursday, the dollar coin will see its third iteration in a generation go into circulation. These will feature United States presidents — four issued per year, from now through 2016, from Washington to Nixon (yes, Nixon).

2. If they would eliminate the paper dollar at the same time....
The coin would become popular. As long as people have the option of using the easier to carry paper dollar, the coins will be ignored.

3. Why not try aluminum?
...Early dollar coins were too similar to the quarter, others were different color but too heavy. Aluminum dollars would feel much different from other coins and would be less heavy to carry around.

4. The size and shape of a British pound would be better
than the near quarter sized attempts of the recent past. What really pisses me off is the notion put forward by the media that the previous two failed because they featured women. Now if this one succeeds they'll say that was the case, whether or not the size and shape have anything to do with it.

5. I love the sacajewea
and used them religiously until they basically vanished. but yes, as long as they print bills as well, people will continue to ignore the coins due to simple inertia and the iconography of the Dollar bill.

the presidents is an interesting idea (and of course, when the bill was passed, they stopped at nixon because we still don't want to put living people on coins, I am sure it will be amended to include Ford, and if Carter has died by the time it is his turn, then Carter as well, although i still like the 25 year rule.) they should reserve the right to mint more coins as demanded, to replace paper as well.

6. I like dollar coins, particularly for toll booths.
They don't tend to blow away in the wind.

I think the Sacagawea coins are just fine. I was actually hoping they would pursue the idea of many different dollar coins, rather like they are doing with state quarters -- but rather than Presidents, I was hoping they would go with prominent Americans.

Now, how about an MLKJ dollar?

7. The REAL reason they are doing this
is to put Ronald Reagan's evil face on Official US Currency.

Many DUers would consider this unwise in that there are only two denominations of currency suitable for embossing the Gipper's face upon. Unfortunately, the Treasury seems less than eager to issue either the Three Dollar Bill or the Plugged Nickel. So the Rotating President Dollar Coin it is.

By putting that worthless asshole on the new dollar coin along with all the other deceased presidents, it protects the dime, it shuts up the three people who still belong to the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project, and--because freepers will collect all the Reagan dollars and hang them, in mahogany frames, on the walls of the vans they live in down by the river--we'll never actually have to see this coin. So it's a winner all around.

Sorry that just brought back memories of Chris Farly. :) One of the funniest SNL skits ever.

12. according to the article - they are only going up to Nixon
I'd be surprised if it makes it past Jefferson before the coins are 'discontinued'

14. We're talking the American Government. Things change.
If enough people want Ronnie on a dollar badly enough, Ronnie will be on a dollar.

They'll shoot straight past everyone between John Adams and Ronald Reagan to do it, though.

8. Aside from the fact
that I would refuse to accept Reagan dollars, will they still do Kennedy and Eisenhower who already have been on dollar coins?

10. Why are we spending money on this?
First all the 50 state quarters, now this. I don't understand the purpose of it, from a government currency standpoint.

11. Yeah, I understand paper currency needing to be updated for
counterfeit protection, but was there a problem with the old quarters?
