House Democrats to vote on anti-war bill |
|
LINKHouse Democratic leaders circulated a nonbinding resolution Monday saying that Congress "disapproves of the decision of President George W. Bush ... to deploy more than 20,000 additional United States combat troops to Iraq."
The measure, expected to come to a vote by Friday, also says that "Congress and the American people will continue to support and protect the members of the United States armed forces who are serving or who have served bravely and honorably in Iraq."
Debate on the resolution is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, with each of the 435 House members allotted five minutes to speak. It will mark the first debate in Congress on the war since Democrats won control of the House and Senate in last November's elections. Opposition to the war figured heavily in the outcome of the election.
Democratic leaders in the House and Senate have vowed to force an end to U.S. participation in the war, and made debate over a nonbinding resolution a symbolic first step.
The House measure was drafted in simple, unadorned terms, an attempt by Democrats to maximize the number of Republicans who would support it and also to emphasize support for the troops. Republican leaders have said they expect at least a few dozen defections when the vote is taken later in the week.

1. Some insiders have predicted... |
|
That as many as 60 Repub members may vote for it. Apparently, many individual Repubs have told their leadership that they cannot afford NOT to vote for it, given eitherr the high casualty rate in their districts, the opposition to the war there, Dub's 30-and-under popularity, or a combination of all of those factors.
Hmmm..."bi-partisan support", anyone?:eyes:
B-)

2. Now is the time to write your Congressional Representative |
|
Please make the effort and tell your Rep - be they Democrat or Republic - that you oppose escalating the war and you want the troops brought home as soon as possible.

3. Definitely. Let your reps know how you feel. I have a republic |
|
rep. but he's been surprising me a little bit this year, so I'm hoping he'll be good for crossing the aisle on this one, too. The more they hear from us, the more they'll go running from fellow repukes to save their own skins. OK, so I wish their conscience would send them to our side, but I'll take anything I can get at this point.
