Bush plans more cuts to veterans' health care
:grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

I'm so mad I could spit nails!!!!!

Veterans face consecutive budget cuts

The Bush administration plans to cut funding for veterans' health care two years from now — even as badly wounded troops returning from
Iraq could overwhelm the system.

Bush is using the cuts, critics say, to help fulfill his pledge to balance the budget by 2012.

After an increase sought for next year, the Bush budget would turn current trends on their head. Even though the cost of providing medical care to veterans has been growing rapidly — by more than 10 percent in many years — White House budget documents assume consecutive cutbacks in 2009 and 2010 and a freeze thereafter.

The proposed cuts are unrealistic in light of recent VA budget trends — its medical care budget has risen every year for two decades and 83 percent in the six years since Bush took office — sowing suspicion that the White House is simply making them up to make its long-term deficit figures look better.

"Either the administration is willingly proposing massive cuts in VA health care," said Rep. Chet Edwards (news, bio, voting record) of Texas, chairman of the panel overseeing the VA's budget. "Or its promise of a balanced budget by 2012 is based on completely unrealistic assumptions."

Edwards said that a more realistic estimate of veterans costs is $16 billion higher than the Bush estimate for 2012.

1. Sounds like it's time for another Veterans Bonus March on DC.
When the veterans of WWI needed their money and Hoover refused to give it to them, he sent Douglas MacArthur and Dwight Eisenhauer to break up "the riot", which was a compilation of marches on Washington.

Not this time. Veterans should flood the offices of their Senators and Representatives and make their needs known.

8. Inexcuseable....
in light of the fact Bush's war is creating a crisis in veterans medical care right now. Does Bush think if we are out of Iraq by 2009 the needs of the veterans maimed and brain damaged will no longer need to be addressed. I would think one of his top priorities would be veterans getting the best health care possible.

12. Yet more Starving the Beast.
Despite the sacrifices our troops make for his personal benefit, he, like Grover Nyquist, consider VA benefits to be socialism, and wants to eliminate them entirely. Thus the games he plays with huge budget deficits, then the crocodile tears shed when he makes the cuts, claiming he has no other choice.

God, to think we still have two more years of this shit...

Bush has slashed budgets for non-defense programs that had already been provided for in the FY 2007 budget. Reallocation of funds in the name of "we're at war" is his big push to get Iran.

Fasten your seat belts. Let's hope we all live through it.

in our military personal and their wellbeing.

in our local rag this morning was the story of a ptsd iraq war vet, a young woman, who died when she drove her car the wrong way on the interstate and crashed into another vehicle. she was unable to get the help she needed, help that even our reichwing, pro-military local rag admits is woefully inadequate, and leaves behind a 7-year old child.

damn this callous, murderous maladministration, and everyone who supports it.

31. Is this really surprising by this Republican administration?? Nope!
Just more of the same by the Bush administration: continually wrapping themselves in our flag, proclaiming that if you aren't supportive of the President's war policies, then you are a terrorist lover/traitor to our country/hurting our troops, et al. However, the same Republican leaders and our President then turn around and propose two consecutive years of budget reductions to the VA and the VA health care system -- all the while the heavy flow of wounded Iraqi and Afghani war veterans are already overwhelming the VA. Ya, right - let's "support the troops." I seriously doubt that such hypocrisy and deceit by this administration will be any surprise to most veterans and our nation's citizens in general. -- Michael

60. How many mindless yellow car magnets does it take,,,
...to legitimize balancing the budget on the backs of those who have put their lives on the line, often for repeat tours of duty, and all for the sake of a war based on lies and deceit? Cost is no object when it comes to spawning an illegimate war, draining the treasury, increasing deficits, rewarding cronies with no-bid sweetheart contracts, and proposing a "surge" in the face of a certain defeat for which the final die was cast long ago. And how long will it take for apologist groups like VFW to realize this administration has no other concern for veterans other than to award each of them the "Purple Shaft with Barbed Wire Cluster" medal. And one of those plus a buck will get you a cheap cup of coffee at any VA cafeteria.

72. As the Cons whine not to cut funding for troops, the Majority
should put up a resolution not to cut funding for veterans! Make the Cons vote on THAT!

73. completely unconscionable
how dare bush push for an escalation and also push for cutting their medical benefits upon their return? Why isn't this being hung round bush's neck? He should never gain any distance from this point in his push to escalate and further enflame and destabalize Iraq.

They're asking the troops to sacrifice too much already... now they want to kick them to the curb when they return? How fucking patriotic they are.

Support the troops my ass--you support the troops by SUPPORTING THE TROOPS, not abandoning them when they no longer serve your purpose.
