Healthcare Crisis

Meet some of the people telling their personal health care stories.
< 1 of 15 >

http://www2.oprah.com/world/health/slide/20070927/health_284_101.jhtml?promocode=more20070927

The healthcare crisis has become a hot-button issue in American politics. As bills pile up, the cost of medical care is the number one cause of bankruptcy in the United States. On average, treatment for a brain tumor costs $200,000. A stroke—$140,000. Leukemia can cost up to $600,000. Would you be covered?

Oscar®-winning filmmaker Michael Moore takes on the healthcare industry in his eye-opening documentary, Sicko, released in June 2007. The film compares the American healthcare system with those of countries that support universal healthcare—and brings to light the hardships faced by patients who thought their needs would be covered by their insurance.

After Michael's first appearance on The Oprah Show, thousands of viewers wrote in to share their healthcare stories. "After seeing Sicko, I cried for hours, then became enraged," wrote a viewer named Teri. "While I'm searching for affordable healthcare, my daughter may die. Why can't we join together to change this? Where is the collective American heart?"

"Even though we have insurance, I cannot afford the medication for my rheumatoid arthritis," Kathy writes. "I have two sons in the military and feel it is a shame that my sons are willing to die for this country, and the same country cannot provide healthcare for their mother."

Oprah says the film changed the way she looked at the issue of healthcare in America. "It's an eye-opening experience, I think, for Americans, many who are like myself … who feel like, 'Well, I'm taken care of. My family's taken care of, and we're okay,'" she says.

67. OPRAH IS THE 1ST ONE TO GIVE MICHAEL A FAIR HEARING ON THIS!
Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 04:28 PM by glarius
I'm so glad he finally got the chance to answer the charge that in Canada, France, U.K. and Germany etc., they have long waiting lists. As Michael correctly pointed out....the waiting lists are not for serious or life threatening situations! I know this from personal experience. Someone close to our family had a sudden emergency out of the blue and was helicoptered to Hamilton, Ontario for immediate, life-saving surgery. (Cost...zero.) It was good to see Michael able to really speak to the insurance person, rather than the phony so-called debate John Stossel had going on 20/20!

110. She actually did say that the insured, the chosen, don't have a clue!
She admitted that until Michael Moore's documentary came out that,

she too, was unaware of the extent of the problem. But I think many

people, rich and poor, were not totally aware of the extent of the issue.

That's why he made the documentary! ;)

HMO Whisteblower Dr. Linda Peeno on the Subordination of Healthcare to a For-Profit System

A decade ago Dr. Linda Peeno made headlines when she told Congress about her work as a medical reviewer
for the giant HMO Humana, where she says she denied a man life-saving medical care in order to boost
company profits. She would go on to become one of the country's best known whistleblowers about HMOs
and the healthcare industry.

72. Yes, it does
It's freaky common how much care is labeled "experimental."

I know this because I used to work at a National Comprehensive Cancer Center here and most of what the MD for whom I worked did was "experimental." Thus, not covered by the patient's insurance. In fairness, these were drug trials, so their care as far as hospital stays and administering the drug were picked up by the pharma companies. Still are in most cases.

52. Oh, I got them to pay. We threatened to sue them and filed a complaint with the state insurance
department along with information on the HUNDREDS of other similar complaints filed against this company. They played around digging through my medical history for more than three months, looking for proof that I had a preexisting condition. Within days of receiving notice of the complaint and our letter threatening legal action, they decided I didn't have a preexisting condition after all. The symptoms that they cited as their "proof" were completely unrelated to the claim I had filed. They are criminal.

Workman's comp stopped everything as a result and the VA doctors said the VA would never approve the surgery. We went on welfare after that and he was able to get the surgery then. We had to damn near lose everything in order for him to get the surgery so he could go back to work.

This battle took almost two years to win.

99. That's so wrong. I'm glad he finally got the surgery
but it's just wrong to make people fight like that. I just wish people who think that the problems with health care don't affect them would realize that it CAN.

in which an insurance company executive said that they routinely denied claims the first time around in the hope that the patient and doctor would give up.

that there was a candidate that supported it. I think even if they didn't want to use Dennis Kucinichs name, they should have atleast have let America know that A candidate does support the non profit idea. What a waste of a show, open peoples eyes up some but not all the way.

That was an important show, but not long enough. She should do an episode a week on the healthcare debacle so everyone can see the faces of the dead and dying because of the greedy insurance industry. 108. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
I scanned my TV guide and found a western station that will be presenting this Oprah show with Michael Moore. I am Canadian and really appreciate my health care system especially after seeing SICKO. My husband and son both were treated for cancers, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Glioblastma Multiforme brain tumor. They received excellent treatment. The best in the country. They lived with hope and care and died with dignity and care. From detection to palliative care all the treatment was excellent and didn't cost us anything. I didn't have to declare bankruptcy.

There is an election coming up, both provincial and soon, most likely, a federal election. Stephen Harper, now prime minister, wants Canada to have the same system as America. He is willing to sneak it in as two tier system. No one I talk to wants this. I am hoping he is on his way out.

Canada's system is not perfect but I am so thankful for it. There was no waiting for any length of time for them to get treatment.

I tell my friends here in Canada to be thankful and to go see SICKO and don't vote for Harper.
My mom in South Carolina does not have any health insurance except for medicare. I dread the day she gets sick.

People in the USA just don't know what their health insurances don't cover until they get hit with disease and then it is too late.

been somewhat consoling knowing that they were getting excellent care from your healthcare system.

A  for you.

The insurance co's are playing dirty tricks on people in the USA, so many of them get the rug
pulled out from under them when they become ill or they don't have any health insurance at all. :(

I'm glad you're encouraging everyone in Canada to watch that documentary and learn from it
and vote accordingly! Don't let what's happening here, happen to Canada.

This is the woman on Oprah.

http://www2.oprah.com/world/health/slide/20070927/health_284_108.jhtml
>>
Karen Ignagni is the president of America's Health Insurance Plans, an organization that lobbies for the majority of health insurance companies in the United States.
>>

Here is the latest lobbying report I could find for American's Health Insurance Plans
http://tinyurl.com/2z5e5l

Look at line 13:
Expenses related to lobbying activities for the reporting period:
$3,420,000

That's for a six month period Jan 1 - June 30, 2007.
