Breaking: Menendez Will Introduce Bill Banning Torture, Restoring Habeas Corpus

Mon Feb 12, 2007

WASHINGTON - TOMORROW, Tuesday, February 12, 2007, U.S. Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) will hold a press conference to discuss the Effective Terrorists Prosecution Act which will restore habeus corpus rights, ban torture and uphold the Geneva Conventions. The senators, both members of the Foreign Relations Committee, will discuss the need for these protections in the fight against terrorism.
He's not only admitting his mistake, he's trying to fix it. That's a rare quality in politics.

Not only is this wonderful news, but it is also great to see they have learned the p.r. side of bill-naming.

6. Excellent news
Finally, we can begin restoring sanity and democracy to our country. I wonder how many Republics will be craven enough to vote against this? It's kind of hard to publicly support either torture, or the removal of habeas corpus. I'm glad to see our Dems stepping forward, because there are many, many more issues that need to be addressed. Six years of injustices, and damage to our reputation should be fixed, and this is a good place to start.

7. Excellent
McConnell will talk it to death, of course. We'll just hold that against the GOP.

The Military Commissions Act should be repealed in it entirety. There is no redeeming feature in that act. It is an abomination.

36. Do you know?
Whether repeals require Presidential signature? I'm guessing, yes.

Interesting situation: does * laugh and shove it under his desk, or sign it because he doesn't want to be openly unwilling to agree with the Constitution?

Another thought-wouldn't it be interesting to see what would happen if Congress passed a bill that was verbatim from the Constitution? Something like "the right of Habeas Corpus shall not be infringed" (did I get that right, early) Would * sign that?

Keep in mind that the Frat Boy has found through reading the invisible ink in the Constitution that he has the power of absolute veto through the signing statement.

I think part of the act is also to absolve Team Bush of any crimes they may have committed before passage of the reprehensible act.

34. I don't know what to think about that, to be honest....
Isn't torture already banned by law? Don't we have habeas corpus rights guaranteed by the Constituttion?

What our Congresspersons and Senators need to be doing is IMPEACHING and REMOVING Bush and Cheney from office for BREAKING THE DAMNED LAW!

So, they pass this law, and Bush signs it WITH ANOTHER DAMNED SIGNING STATEMENT. He continues to torture, and continues denying habeas corpus rights....and, we shake our heads saying "bad, bad, bad." And, NOTHING CHANGES! And, nothing will change as long as the chimp and his dick are still in power.
