US vs Iran : assorted news bits from Europe
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 07:12 PM by BelgianMadCow
First off : a freelance journalist called Rudi Vranckx went to Afghanistan, he was supposed to be embedded with UK troops in the south but even though he had clearance, the soldiers on the ground did not let him accompany them. The reason? Because they suffered a big loss, and were about to strike back on a town with overwhelming force (possibly flattening it), and did not want to have witnesses.

Second : this journalist wanted to travel to a western province of Afghanistan too. Again it was not allowed. Word off the record was that the US is building a large base there for listening to Iran and having staging point capacity. I had not heard of this at all.

Third : Mohammed El Baradei visited our prime minister Guy Verhofstadt today, apparently because belgium is now chairing the UN measures committee. He emphasized that
1) Iran is nowhere near having nuclear weapons, but they do have knowledge
2) Any kind of military action would strengthen the Iranian hardliners and would BUILD support for making nuclear weapons a top priority.
3) You cannot bomb knowledge.

Fourth : in discussing the above topics on the nightly radio news show on public radio, the host was saying America is taking and increasingly sharp position on IraN. As justification, he reiterated the "conically shaped explosives" "proof" that I believe was shown to have no basis in fact.
He just reiterated that without any doubts. Go figure.

And finally, the segment ended with the conclusion "but most military observers consider an attack on Iran to be extremely dangerous".

:shudder:

1. In your fourth point; did you really mean Iraq? Or did you mean Iran?
...the host was saying America is taking and increasingly sharp position on Iraq. (my bold)

4. In general, what are Europeans saying about the US striking Iran?
On CNN international this morning they asked for letters on whether or not people believed the "evidence" (my quotations) the US is presenting against Iran. They read several letters from different parts of the world, and most of them bought into the hype. Now of course this is still CNN, so I know how they create their own reality.

So what are Europeans saying?
