"The Nine" by Jeffrey Toobin |
|
I'm reading Toobin's new book about the Supreme Court, "The Nine," and it is fabulous. Both from a legal standpoint and a historical/personality standpoint, Toobin captures the battle for the Supreme Court. I highly recommend it. His chapters on Bush v. Gore alone are worth the price of the book.
And it reminds me. 2008. The ONLY thing that matters (OK, maybe not the ONLY thing, but certainly a HUUUUUUGE thing) is the Supreme Court. It is imperative that we Democrats win the White House. Absolutely imperative.
Read Toobin's book and you'll understand.

3. Toobin is an excellent writer |
|
The book doesn't read like a law book (thank goodness!). It's been all over CNN, with good reason.

2. What surprised me most about the book is that Roe V. Wade is still law |
|
To a large degree that has been in spite of the Democrats. The number of justices that from the Federalist Society that the Democrats essentially let by is astonding.
Perhaps people don't remember how bad it used to be.
How many realize that bork actually thought it was O.K. for a barber to refuse to give a haircut to an African American.
This is the foundation of what the supreme court is becoming, and to a large degree the Democrats allowed it to happen
Thomas on the basis of his experience, and his refusal to answer questions should never have be approved

4. We lose the WH in 2008 and Roe is gone. |
|
That's the lesson of Toobin's book.

5. no guarentee either way. Remember the wonderful accolades |
|
members in Congress gave for Roberts?
They knew these people belonged to the good old boys club, the Federalist Society, and for that alone they should have been rejected

6. Roberts advised James Baker in the 2000 election theft. |
|
He told Baker that SCOTUS would definitely take the case of Bush v. Gore. And he was a pallbearer for Rehnquist.
