2. I can give you some insights concerning his entrepreneurial cousin, Cha Ching.
Cha Ching believes that a penny saved is a penny earned, but he also believes that there's a sucker born every minute, and one should never give a sucker an even break.

Cha Ching is considered a philosophical black sheep in academic circles, but he is revered by The Cato Institute.

4. I didn't have a clue about ' I Ching' so here a definition for me and others.
The I Ching (often spelled as I Jing, Yi Ching, Yi King, or Yi Jing; also called "Book of Changes" or "Classic of Changes") is the oldest of the Chinese classic texts. A symbol system designed to identify order in what seem like chance events, it describes an ancient system of cosmology and philosophy that is at the heart of Chinese cultural beliefs.

9. I'm not lookng for a metaphysical explanation.
It actually has some very sound advice, if you take out the star gazing out of it. Not that I have a problem with astrologist. It's not like we didn't have a First Lady who dabbled in it.

10. I'm going to mangle it badly.
When a person encounters a situation in which they cannot possibly win, the I Ching suggests to withdraw and look for inner peace some place else. And there, you gather strength and wait. Basically, wait for a better time to air your grievances.

11. Something like this?
Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 11:55 AM by wlucinda
The present is embodied in Hexagram 52 - Ken (Keeping Still): When one is resting, and he loses all consciousness of self; when he walks in his courtyard, and does not see any of the persons in it, there will be no error.
The fifth line, divided, shows its subject keeping his jawbones at rest, so that his words are all orderly. Occasion for repentance will disappear.
The situation is evolving slowly, and Yang (the active masculine force) is gaining ground.

The future is embodied in Hexagram 53 - Chien (Gradual Progress): We see the marriage of a young lady, and the good fortune attending it. There will be advantage in being firm and correct.
The things most apparent, those above and in front, are embodied by the upper trigram Ken (Mountain), which is tansforming into Sun (Wind). As part of this process, stillness and obstruction are giving way to penetration and following.
The things least apparent, those below and behind, are embodied by the lower trigram Ken (Mountain), which represents stillness and obstruction.

The I Ching really is amazing. This site lets you plug in questions and will being up hexagrams in response.

Back to say that if you have a particular configuration that you have seen I can look it up for you in my reference. The I Ching is so fluid that you may be thinking of any number of combinations.

17. Just looking for practical advice.
I'm no good at reading the passages. I tend to resist and read into them, what I want to read into them. So, I'm just looking for practical advice.

But I did give it a shot. How is this: When you're faced with a corrupt situation, where you cannot possibly win, "do not cross the stream," or rather, do not fight the obstacle on their ground, because you will fail. But there is still an advantage if you are "firm and correct." Which I think means, stand your ground and don't give in to the corruption around you. So wait. If you exercise "apprehensive caution," you may still prevail.

Does that sound about right?

Here's the paragraph that gave me the most inspiration:

"Though there is sincerity in one's contention, he will yet meet with opposition and obstruction. If he cherish an apprehensive caution, there will be good fortune. If he prosecute the contention to the bitter end, there will be evil. It will be advantageous to see the great man. It will not be advantageous to cross the great stream."

20. Yes. That sounds like
a good assessment of that paragraph which applies in the particular situation that was asked about.
It appears there will still be contention even if you are standing on solid ground. Just expect it. It also suggests that there may be one who can assist. In my experience that can be an actual person, another source of inspiration, or looking within.

Though others may interpret that differently. :)

And at times "the great man" proves to be wisdom from an unexpect source. A foe who says something that the connects the dots for you, a stranger on an elevator who does the same, etc. Inspiration can come from anywhere. The tricky part is paying attention.

There are scores, if not hundreds, of English translations from the I Ching. It would be helpful to know where to look. :hi:

18. Ah, ok.
I thought the "drop 10 and punt" was a quote you wanted clarification on.

Hexagram 52 is made by stacking the trigram for "mountain" (艮, gen) and making "mountain on mountain." This trigram generally means stillness; doubled like this, it carries a meaning of total tranquility to the point where nothing else exists. You can think of someone climbing a very high mountain and closing his eyes; the sounds of the workaday world far below is silenced and all one can hear are the sounds of nature. Gen also has some negative attributes of obstruction, but hexagram 52 is usually seen in a positive light, or at least in the sense of "an obstruction obstructing another obstruction, bringing tranquility."

Hexagram 53 is made by placing the trigram for "wind" (巽, xun) on "mountain." Xun is usually interpreted as meaning gentleness, so the hexagram generally means "gentleness out of tranquility." Typically there is a sense of progress or advancement; think of someone on a journey of tranquility to visit the wind. Another interpretation is the slow, gradual work of wind and weather wearing away a mountain; progress is being made even when it is not obvious.

23. (bow)
I find the I Ching very cumbersome to use, as you generally cast one hexagram, then cast another based on the first, then interpret how the symbols have changed (thus the name of the oracle, "The Book of Changes"), then repeat until you get bored. The general meanings of the hexagrams can be derived from the two component trigrams, which what I do rather than refer to the book.

Personally, tarot cards are more to my liking, but to each his own. :toast:

24. Because there is change involved, the I Ching is probably more appropriate.
Nothing against Tarot Cards. I actually had my reading done and it came very close to true. There were a card that meant that we were getting money in the near future. The card involved an elephant with money coming out of his nose. That was the year that George Bush was elected president and we got $300.00 each in rebate money.

25. Try reading the Tao Te Ching.
pronounced Dao De Jing. But try sevreal different translations, since the ancient Chinese does not translate into english well and different translations can say vastly different thing. the best I've read is Backward Down the Path, by Jerry Dalton.

But it will give you the conceptual background to understand the I Ching. There's too much involved to try and explain here briefly.
