Liberals win 2nd majority govt., Conservatives gain no seats in Canada's biggest province
from CBC News:

Note to those unfamiliar with Canadian parties. The NDP, or New Democratic Party, is to the left of the Liberals.

McGuinty wins 2nd majority, but NDP gains in Ontario

CBC News

Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty has won his second term as Ontario's premier with a majority government, despite a slight reduction in Liberal seats, CBC News projects.

It marks the first time in seven decades that the party has won a back-to-back majority since Mitch Hepburn secured two consecutive terms, ending in 1937.

McGuinty suffered repeated criticism for his broken promises throughout the election campaign.

Early results showed the Progressive Conservatives had not increased their seat count.

The winners appeared to be the NDP and Green party, with both gaining popular votes.

Referring to the surge in the popular vote for the NDP and the Greens, political commentator Allan Gregg of the Strategic Counsel said, "It is kind of a protest vote, but it sends a message to the main parties." ......(more)

4. You know, you honestly might be onto something in all seriousness, The other day a Canadian
Du told someone not to worry about the direction his country was taking, he said Canadians for the most part are much smarter then Americans when it comes to being up to date on politics and more savy about the inner goings on of what it actually entails.

I'm really happy to see he was spot on.

10. In all honesty, that's likely true.
Talking to the high school students at the school up the street, it seems that most of them are solidly socialist or progressive. They're aware of the high cost of the war in Iraq, both in money and human lives, and are aware of the stances and platforms of the parties in Canada and the US.

We still have civics and social studies classes, it seems.

5. Maybe yes, maybe no.
One can hope.

The Partis Québècois is threatening to bring the government down before the throne speech. *shrug* It's kind of ironic to hope that the guys who want to separate will bring on a needed election, but this is Canada, eh? Political satire is alive and kicking in real time.

7. A tale of Canadian conservative parties
Once upon a time the national conservative party was the "Progressive Conservative" party.

Then, a new movement started in Alberta and they formed the "Reform" party. Then they caught on that they were splitting the movement, so the two parties merged.

Now, what to name this new party? Then, the triumphant news emerged.

Henceforth, the new party would be called the "Conservative Reform Alliance Party"

That's right. The "CRAP" party.
