Are Muslims becoming the new Jews of Europe |
|
I was listening to npr today and there was all this fuss about a mosque in Cologne , with one right winger saying that Muslims are alien to the culture , live in their ghetto's and don't integrate well either in dress or custom ?
Where did I encounter such arguments before ? In pre-1945 and 19th century anti-semetic literature perhaps ?

1. Remember the Paris riots? |
|
Police killed a muslim teenager (was it two?), there were big race riots, and the American conservative media was going full on Kampf-out propaganda blitz, as if we were on the edge of a muslim-induce apocalypse.

I've heard very little about much of this in the past few years, but in actuality its been happening for the past several decades, but now Moslem communities in France, if I remember correctly are demanding services that, you know most of the other people living in France get.
Schooling is button that likes to get pressed often, but it seems to share problems with sub-standard living conditions like those in Los Angeles, new York, Detroit, Atlanta...Insularity and lack of access to social services ar a major problem with migration populations form communities in non-native lands.

4. I don't see much of a comparison |
|
The Jews were a long-established, stable minority population in Europe that had long attracted suspicion due to their alien customs, their vaguely-understood religion, and (most importantly) their insistence on maintaining an arm's length from other cultures.
The Muslims, on the other hand, are a recent phenomenon, with a rapidly-growing population, a brash, loud and growing political voice, who are applying some degree of pressure to the employment market, and who attract suspicion due to the occasional presence of radical preachers.
Both represent European xenophobia, but other than that they're not very closely related. I'd say it's closer to our situation with Latin immigrants.

7. I think it's not a really good comparison. |
|
Jews have been in Europe for centuries and have been Europeanized culturally. European Anti-Semitism seems to have had traditionally to do with the prominent economic position of many Jews in the European economy historically and religion was a convenient excuse to make them a target when a king wanted to get rid of his debts or the peasants were pissed off. With Muslims a lot of the anti-immigrant panic seems to be the result of lack of assimilation mixed with high birth rates. Things like the outrageous reaction to the Mohammad cartoons only make the panic worse.

8. Yep-- but their lives were already as valued as those of the Jewish population of Europe |
|

The value according to those who killed them or ignored their deaths: 0
Muslim populations in outlying lands of the declining Ottoman Empire were worth nothing.
Millions killed in Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Eastern Anatolia, North Black Sea... during late nineteenth and early 20th century...civilian populations--not soldiers.
When is congress going to pass a resolution on that genocide? Never. It appears Muslim lives don't count worth shit.
BTW Eid Mubarak to Muslim DUers
