If an actor did a commercial for army recruitments...
and is not in favor of the war...but it's a paying acting job. Would you blame him/her if they took it?

2. I know a young actor in LA who is up for a part in a recruiting ad
and is against the war, but he also says it would be good exposure. He's conflicted.

from any thoughts of taking a "job" for military recruiters and think about what it would do to his soul..and I mean that. He may be too young to see the big picture but he will regret sooner or later.

Nobody needs that kind of fucking "exposure". People in the future that he would care about aren't the kind who would condone this action.

4. Well, we do still need an Army
If people want to join voluntarily I guess it is better than a draft.

5. No--where the hell are we going to get people to defend us, if they don't advertise and recruit?

6. I would only be offended if it was a popular actor
one who could sway youngsters into joining because they think he wants them to. An unknown actor needs to get his gigs where he can.

8. Depends ...
If it's one of those outrageous commercials that glorifies the occupation, misleads, makes the soldiers look like tough supermen? I'd take offense to that.

If it's an honest commercial which explains the various aspects of the military as viable career choices (which they can be), I wouldn't blame them.

As someone said above, we do need a military. I would hope that the reasons for that don't have to be explained in great depth.

10. If he has bills to pay
He needs to take the job. And don't listen to the self-righteous who say otherwise because most people never put their money where their mouth is anyway. The only ones who I ever hear willing to make a sacrifice are the ones with the least, and I personally think we ought to stop doing it.

11. actually, it isn't necessarily good exposure....
this isn't a judegment on the type of commercial he is considering, but commercial actors are a dime a dozen, and all this will get him is a little bit of resume fodder. That's the nature of the business. Think of all the actors you've seen in commercials, or who landed small roles in movies or TV, even opposite big stars. Many of them never do anything else but that part.

He should take the job if he needs it or to keep his chops up and ply his craft, but I guarantee that no casting director will care that he was "drill instructor #3" in the latest Army ad. All they care about is whether he is right for a particular part or not....and a bad audition doesn't even mean he's out, nor does a good audition mean he's automatically in.

I don't envy him in his chosen profession. It's extemely cutthroat and verty competitive.
