Smearing Al Gore: Here We Go Again - Robert Parry - Consortium News

When people wonder how the United States ended up in today’s nightmarish predicament, a big part of the answer is that the right-wing message machine and the mainstream U.S. news media distorted reality at key moments about key people, perhaps most notably Al Gore during Campaign 2000.

-snip-

Lies and distortions about Al Gore remain an easy political commodity to sell, as we have seen in the renewed assault on Gore in the wake of his winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

As the news spread about the Nobel Committee’s recognition of Gore’s work publicizing the threat from global warming, both the right-wing media and major news outlets geared up to hype criticism of Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” in a ruling by an obscure English judge.

Hours before the Nobel Prize announcement, the Washington Post ran a news story quoting High Court Judge Michael Burton as detecting “nine errors” in the documentary and asserting that the alleged mistakes “arise in the context of alarmism and exaggeration in support of his political thesis.”

Burton ruled that English schools could show the film but only with a cautionary advisory for students.

-snip-

Parry goes on to rip the shreds out of Burton's rulings regarding "inaccuracies" in Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth". Apparently, the truth for Burton is indeed inconvenient.

1. Just wait for the Sunday morning news shows
Even Stephanopoulus will utter some folderol
aimed at diminishing Gore as both a statesman
and a human being, notwithstanding Donna Brazile
on the Roundtable.

Whores, all of them.

2. speaking of smearing Al Gore . . .
yesterday's New York Post (I read it for the sports, honest!) carried the story on Page 1 with the headline "Al's Nobel Prize: How Convenient" . . . moving on to the coverage on Pages 4-5 we find a headline across both pages that reads "Nobel Effort Hypes Gore '08, and an Andrea Peyser column entitled "Al(armist)'s Lefty Trifecta" derisively citing the Nobel, the Oscar, and the Emmy . . .

but the best item was a sidebar headlined "Controversial Recipients" that listed five previous winners: Yasser Arafat, Kofi Annan, Kenyan environmental activist Wangari Maathai, Le Duc Tho, and Guatamalan political activist Rigoberto Menchu . . . no mention of the likes of Henry Kissinger, Jimmy Carter, or anyone else who might leave a more favorable impression . . .

gotta love those Rupert Murdoch's rags . . . they make such great bird cage lining and puppy training material . . .

4. And this sort of bullshit is precisely why Gore
no longer has the heart for politics. Therefore perhaps the single best hope for saving this country and this planet is a dashed one.
