Al Gore is John Galt??? Hell no, he's Cool Hand Luke.
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 09:48 AM by Fly by night
If I've noticed anything over the past few days (post-Nobel), it is the frightened scrambling of the corporate media and too many others to denigrate the prospect of Gore re-entering politics -- of finally becoming our President. And of all the arguments being posed to discourage that decision, the argument posed in a thread here on GD (on the "Greatest" page and certainly in too many other places) that Al Gore is John Galt is the most odious.

Gore is "too good" for America? Not the America I know and love, not by a long shot.

That thread said that Gore "... can recognize that this nation is past changing, let alone saving...." Oh, I hardly think so. Since the US remains the leader (if not the role model) for industrialized nations on this globe, if Gore thought this country was "past changing", I doubt if he would be spending any time on global warming or any other serious issue. He would kick back on his Tennessee farm and sadly let the world pass him by. That's not the Al we know. That's not the Al I admire and respect.

Gore is a public servant, the child of public servants. His father (whose 1970 US Senate re-election campaign I worked in as a rosy-cheeked Vanderbilt student) voted for civil rights and against the Vietnam war in the 60s when neither of these votes were easy for a Southern Senator (and the consequences were definitely hard.) People of principle don't run from a fight worth having -- they embrace the opportunity to kick un-American ass and call out treasonous names.

Gore is not too good for this country -- he, and the people like him, are what make this country the great nation we always have been, the current bull-shit and mindless blather Smirking Chimp period notwithstanding.

Gore is not above this fray -- he is among the best equipped to enter it. Don't sell short Gore's courage, his intelligence, his love of this country (the country he will help leave to his children and grandchildren, and ours).

The only thing I agree with in the "Al is John Galt" thread is the "fooled me once" comment. If we had not spent the past seven years working to prevent future election fraud and theft, if we had not called the corporate media to task for their no-longer even thinly-veiled biases, if we did not have the majority of Americans awakened to the many threats we now face and to the dishonesty, immorality and blood-lust of the Rethugs, it might be possible to fool us twice. But boy howdy, we are all wide awake now!! We will protect our polling places like the Houses of Democracy that they are -- we will turn out voters in numbers that will stagger the imagination, we will tune out the shrill voices of corporate media complacency and resignation whenever and wherever they appear, and -- in the majority of states -- we will count the votes as they were cast. What a long-overdue (and country-saving) concept that is.

Folks, after seven years of Bushitler, we have met the enemies and they sure as hell ain't us. Are any of us too "good" for the hard fight we have ahead of us to take our country back? If we're not, then certainly Al isn't either.

Al Gore is John Galt? Hell no, Al is Cool Hand Luke.

And while the corporate media talking-head "sheriffs" might continue to bemoan a "failure to communicate" with Al's message (and what I sincerely hope is his strategy for rescuing this country by leading it again), the other convicts (that is ALL of us, folks) get Al, get "it" and are more than ready to get on with it. The difference today, besides the other democracy-saving steps I mentioned above, is that we won't let nay-sayers keep Al bottled up in semi-retirement, we won't let them convince us he has "escaped" to a better world (the world above politics, as if there was such a place) that does not involve fighting -- here and now -- for what is right, including the right (finally) to lead this country as we chose him to do. Al earned the "consent of the governed" once and he will earn it again, handily, when he chooses to ask for it.

Fool us twice? After seven years of horse-shit, we know there is no pony buried in any Rethug's stall. But there sure as hell is a strong, stubborn and serious Tennessee mule waiting in the wings, and his name is Cool Hand Al.

Bring it on! Please, Cool Hand Al, bring it on.

5. I surely hope not. Only then will our own homegrown anti-democracy terrorists win.
This country is certainly worth saving -- for us, for those who come after us and for everyone else who inhabits this globe with us.

6. The same thing that happens to all of us. He died.
But he didn't die on his knees, in surrender. And he left a fountain of hope behind.

Believe me, I want a different ending for "Cool Hand Al". It's about time the inmates actually got to run this asylum. We certainly can do better than the unelected sheriffs who have imposed their will on us. After all, that's what democracy is, n'est pas?

As Bruce would say, "Well now, ev'rything dies, baby, that's a fact.
But maybe ev'rything that dies someday comes back."

Vote free or die bold.

That has always been our choice.

Why should it change now?

8. Escaped with the big blonde dude (dragline) and holed up in a chruch
I think the sherrif tells his men to hold their fire at one point but that boss dude with the mirrored sunglasses shoots Luke in the throat.

Here's a recount: "Dragline supports and carries his mortally-wounded friend to the vengeful bosses, and then hysterically charges toward the killer - he grabs at the man's throat with an iron grip. The reflective glasses that have never left the boss's face topple to the ground. Weakened and sliding in mud, the boss gropes for his glasses. As Luke is put in a vehicle and taken to his sure death at the prison hispital, Dragline encourages him: "You hang on in there Luke. You hang on. There's gonna be some world-shakin' Luke. We gonna send you a postcard." Flooded by a reddish glow, Luke dies in the back seat of the boss' car - his face wears the familiar grin - a sign of the victory of his spirit over death. The tires of the vehicle smash and grind the sunglasses into the mud. In the distance as the car drives away, a stoplight turns from green to red - his spirit leaves his body.

In a final montage sequence, Dragline favorably remembers and resurrects his martyred hero while telling the story of his death to his convict-compatriots outside the church during a work break in the chain gang. Images of Luke's legendary, unbreakable smile from scenes in the film are flashed back on the screen:

Dragline: They took him right down that road.
Convict(s): What'd he look like, Drag?...Yeah, what'd he look like?..He had his eyes opened or closed, Drag?
Dragline: He was smiling...That's right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn't know it 'fore, they could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Old Luke, he was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. Hell, he's a natural-born world-shaker.

The camera pulls back from Dragline, now in leg-iron chains himself, chopping weeds at a cross-roads - a crucifix symbol. Luke's picture (torn cross-wise) is superimposed on the cross-roads where the chain gang works."

14. The Noise Machine knows a threat to their propaganda
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 11:28 AM by sfexpat2000
when they see it, don't they?

What a silly desperate attempt to marginalize Gore.

I suppose the NM would have said the same thing about John Kennedy and Robert Kennedy and about Dr. King -- or about any strong, effective and attractive leader that we were lucky enough to have.

26. Say what you will . . .
but calling me "Noise Machine" is fightin' words! :smoke: Wanna go double-or-nothing and accuse me of supporting Senator Clinton, too?

Al has simply seen that our political process is far too filthy a mess. As he's said, he can get more done outside the system than in it.

B-T-W, whose propaganda? And where, in all I said about him, including the part about working joyfully to see him (re-) elected, was there an attempt to marginalize?

Or did you even read the post?

28. Could be . . . or that I misunderstood
I wrote the initial post with the John Galt analogy that was responded to here, but not referenced.

I wouldn't marginalize Gore for anything, but I also recognize that at this juncture he's highly unlikely to run. I'll gladly eat my words if he does.

I also have a very, very dim view of my country right now. I just do.

Thanks for the clarification!

Agree, completely.

Please Mr Gore, run a Presidential campaign and then be President. America and the world will be your partner.

Recommended.

20. Thanks, UL. The day Gore announces, he will jump to the head of the Dem pack.
Within one week, he will raise $50-100 million.

And if I have anything to say about it, within one year, we will have doubled the new voter registrations that we achieved in 2004.

Keep hope alive, Cool Hand Al. Run for President the same way you love this country -- deeply, completely and faithfully.
