Will the Republican Party eventually be extinct?
We're already seeing the marginalization of the Republican Party. As their popularity plummets, they crawl even further back into their little putrid hole of conservatism, wrapping themselves with the mantle of Ronald Reagan. They are falling further and further out of touch with the American people on issues such as civil rights, education, tax cuts for the rich, etc. I don't know if I'll ever see the actual extinction of the Republican Party in my lifetime, but it does seem that it could very likely become a very minor political force - much like Libertarians are today. Eventually they could be left with only the extreme religious right - a group that should also be shrinking in number.

I also think that as Republican influence wanes, it's possible that we could see a split in the Democratic Party, between the more progressive liberals and the conservative elements. We already see the tension rising in our party. Maybe the end result will be pretty much what we have now, only with different labels - Progressive Democrats versus Conservative Democrats (or whatever you want to call them).

2. No the history does not go somehwere else
it will change forms...

Hell historically the Dems were once where the Republicans were at one time

And if they go away... as a party, you will see the rise of ANOTHER conservative party

3. One can only hope.

I think the Republican Party will melt away like the global icecaps, except I'll miss the icecaps. Unfortunately, the uglies who inhabit that party will always be around.

7. Too damn true. But we can at least hope they do fall into the disposal
of history. The sooner the planet is rid of them, the better off everyone will be.

5. Read this for shock value.
It's by Bill Kristol, the all-American Chickenhawk. http://weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/014/214lenrb.asp

It's a good reason why there can be no napping or over-optimism caused laziness in 2008. None!

6. I wish, but it'll never happen
Not as long as there are brain-dead rednecks who hate gays, insane braying jackasses who think abortion is murder, and rich people who are so mad with greed that no amount of money is ever enough.

P.S.
If anyone has an account at FreakRepublic, please feel free to post the above response over there.

9. They will merge with the DLC and reclaim the original name of
the Democratic Republicans.

That will leave the Democrats to absorb the Greens, who will no longer be marginalized by the DLC faction, and we will become the progressive party we once were.

15. I agree. Infact I think it's happening right now.
with the growth of the DLC and Blue Dog type dems. Along with the growth of 'progressive' dems (those who did not leave the party already to become 'indies").

So unless something changes the dems wil be the new repugs, an a transformed green or and entirely new party will take the dems place within 20 yrs.

10. They have certainly shot themselves in their collective foot.

They are now known far and wide as the party of thieves, liars and sex offenders. Voters are leaving their ranks in droves. The November election sent a message loud and clear ... get out.

that will sacrifice all to prove they are RIGHT!!! ...because they are NEVER wrong will always be with us. The name of the party may change, but the evolutionary detritus will return.

17. Well look at how other big parties went extinct
I'm pretty sure only two big national parties have gone extinct in the US, the Federalists, and the Whigs.

The Federalists opposed the Louisiana purchase because they feared they would never win any of the states bought in the purchase, which helped soon bury their party. They were also a really prorich people party.

The Whigs fell apart from the issue of slavery, they had been more of a pronorth party, but they failed to satisfy either the north or the south and died out. In the north they got replaced by the republican party, and in the south the democrats became the sole political party. A lot of the whigs in the north later became republicans.

So unless the republicans screw up REALLY bad on an issue that's very important to most Americans, no they probably won't go out of existence.

21. That would be one of the worst things that could happen to the Democratic Party
This country is not designed to operate under single-party rule.

22. Unfortunately, No!
If they are beaten down, and pushed aside over the next few years, they will simply slither under a rock somewhere and wait. Wait for the next opportunity that presents itself to slime their way out of the dark and into to semi-light.

Creatures like the Neo-Con GOPs can never truly be eradicated. They might become dormant for awhile, but they will reinvent themselves and emerge to destroy again.

We must never let our guard down again.
